Cell Phone

Senior citizen 79 years old makes less than 10 calls per month on it. Does anyone know a real cheap plan for him. He is on someone elses now and pays them 10$ per month but has to get off. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

We use PagePlus. It's a prepaid company.

You can use almost any Verizon phone with PagePlus - just no iPhones or Verizon pre-paid phones meant for use on their InPulse network or phones that have previously been used on the Verizon pre-paid network.

If he doesn't already have a Verizon phone, this phone is a great price and works very well on PagePlus: Verizon Palm Pixi Plus 3G Touchscreen Smartphone with 8GB Memory Somebody would probably need to help him set it up to turn off the data feature. Otherwise, it would eat up his balance very quickly!

The best thing would probably be to add an $80 PIN to his phone of choice. That would load the phone with one year of service and 2000 minutes.

Their cheapest option is to buy a $10 PIN (100 minutes) every four months.

You can see their rates here: Prepaid Cell Phone Cards | Prepaid National Cell Phones

I don't know anything about it, but what about that "Jitterbug" phone that I used to see commercials for all the time. Wasn't that for senior citizens?

If he goes with PagePlus and happens to get the phone I recommended above, there is a forum at KittyWireless that has very good instructions for getting it set up. With Pageplus, you can have a smartphone without having a data plan, but if your phone is capable of receiving data, it is critical to turn the phone's data capability OFF so it doesn't suck a lot of data and charge you out the wazoo. That particular phone might be more phone than he wants - and he might not like the touchscreen - in which case, probably anything from an EnV (not a touch version) to a Razr would work, and those can be picked up pretty cheaply on eBay, both new and used.

Also, kittywireless.com sells PagePlus-compatible phones and has very good customer service, so they might be worth looking into. PagePlus is very inexpensive, and their BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) capability is nice (as opposed to Tracfone, which requires you to use one of their Tracfone branded dumbphones)... but they are also 'do it yourself' in a lot of ways, and if you don't know what you are doing you can end up losing your balance. A dealer like KittyWireless can serve as a buffer between you and PagePlus and make sure your plan gets set up properly, and troubleshoot for you if something isn't right. They don't provide support for phones they don't sell themselves, though.

HowardForums has a PagePlus forum, and I got a lot of my initial information there. I still reference them occasionally because they do have members who are very knowledgeable, but if you ask a question they consider to be stupid, or a question that has already been asked and you didn't search the forums before asking, be prepared to be thick-skinned. They are not very patient or friendly when they re-direct newbies to other threads.
