Unhappy My son Tommy has been diagonsed with ocd

Hi there all we have had thoughts about this along time and not that we ignored it or anything, but from a very young age Tommy was always a neat and clean kid and as he got older he became worse. It had gotten really bad because while he goes to college and works with my husband, if he is home he just starts cleaning and wants everything in its place. He went to the doctor and he knew we all knew, we are just worried I do not want it , to take over his life. He takes 3 showers a day is always washing his hands, only uses know paper plates and plastic utensils, as his parents and his mom I am sooooooo worried. If anyone here can offer any advice or any help I would sincerely appreciate. Thanks for listening peace and sunshine to all... Catherine

I hope he is seeing a therapist of some sort. I don't knw from experience but I have heard that there is good help and medication for OCD.

I don't know if this will help seeing how he's an adult, but remind him that our bodies have "good" germs that help keep us healthy and washing to much will kill them also.
Not blaming you, but remember he has major health issues, so he probably picked this up from you(family) trying to keep him from getting sick when he was younger.
I also second him getting professional help with this.
hth,
Judy

I agree totally with what Judy said. I hope he is able to find the help to live comfortably with his condition and not let it over take his life.

Unhappy

Thanks everyone and yes from the moment we found out about his heart conditions I have always be super safe with germs and then all his stomach problems, I only assume with all those factors and since he is an adult now, he is so much more aware. He would like to speak someone and will we do it for his sake, so that this condition does not take over his life, which at times it can. Also on the other hand I am a very clean person always was, however my husband literally does more cleaning then I do, so our children have grown up in a very very clean home and learned early to keep things in place and take care of their room, which at the time was a good thing. However now that Caitlin is home from College, we have noticed him commenting on her room and that she could keep it cleaner. We have some challenges ahead , will update... Peace and blessings to all... Catherine

My daughter was diagnosed at 4 years old OCD with ADD tendencies. Let me tell you it was rough in the beginning(before she was diagnosed). I finally had to take her to a psychologist to be diagnosed. She got so bad with the hand washing that her little hands were raw and that was just the beginning. When they are younger it is easier to get them to break habits. We did reward systems to change the behaviors and that went good for a few years. She would develop new quirks every time she quit one but we would just come up with new rewards. They wanted to medicate her but I just couldn't see medicating her at such a young age especially since the rewards worked. Now that she is 10 it gets a little harder to break habits and her ADD is starting to over rule the OCD so we may look into ADD meds. She hated therapy but that is because she is super shy and the therapy just seemed to cause more anxiety which caused her to start a new compulsive behavior so we skip it for now. Being that your son is an adult he would probably really benefit from the therapy. Maybe there is an underlying issue causing him to have these compulsions. If not, I have heard that the meds work wonders. Hope he gets it under control soon because it is hard to live with. My daughter sometimes has it so bad that if she touches something with one hand she HAS to touch it with the other.
