omg dh told me about this...what a load of sh*t. I deal with so many welfare ppl, (highly abused if you ask me) and this just makes me sick. He ought to lose ALL of his winnings AND have to pay back what he didn't deserve to get in food stamps. They are for ppl who truly need them, NOT a friggin millionaire.

Just another example of the sense of entitlement this country has come to expect. Makes me mad, too.

I agree. They should really place a limit on the time people could receive benefits, instead of allowing people to make a living off of living off of the system.

Wow. I have two (count them two) diabetic children with no insurance, husband has no job. We can't get any help because my two oldest children are working full time and myself. We can't get a flippin dime out of nobody and I am not kicking my children out with nowhere to go. How sad. If someone wants him to feel bad send him my way I can give him the guilt speech all the way to the bank where I have NO money.

I am OUTRAGED. I know what the thinking behind the law/rule is. If someone poor gets an inheritance, a tax refund, or some other lump sum amount that doesn't necessarily mean they won't be poor anymore. But there used to be a limit on the value of your resources i.e. you can't apply for welfare/food stamps if you're driving a $70,000 Mercedes or a Lamborghini. But this can't be the first food stamp recipient to win a prize. This is an example of the idiocy of bureaucracy.

Textchick I am sorry about your family's situation. It truly is an injustice.

textchick, so sorry for your situation. I so feel for ya.....

I got my hours cut at work (for what? I'm STILL waiting for that answer.... ) ....and while I don't have kids with any medical problems (thank you God) I do have a diabetic dog.....which the cost of insulin for a dog is OUTRAGEOUS. I see the welfare ppl sitting on their porches guzzling the biggest bottles of Pepsi I have ever seen and smoking their pricey cigs, while their children play on the curb dirty and half clothed.

And ppl wonder why I am so bitter sometimes......

OK--dirty, half-clothed kids do not equate to bad parenting. My boys were grimy and preferred to not be clothed when they were younger. Today, my oldest prefers to NOT get dirty, but still has a thing about wearing clothes; the youngest doesn't mind getting grimy, but is a clothes horse! That said:
I recently lost my job. I have no income at this time, other than "spotty" child support. I have chronic medical conditions (one medication is over $450/mo). I have two children who have had significant medical issues (youngest @ 11 has already had kidney stones twice)--and now I have no insurance.
I have had to apply for public assistance. I have applied for so many jobs that I have lost count (and have an interview on Friday)...I am appalled that someone who doesn't have an actual need for assistance chooses to manipulate the system.

I feel for you losing your job. I think you are very resourceful and will find another soon or perhaps even something "better". Be inventive, creative, and keep at it. What about relocating? Do you have any contacts that could perhaps open a door even a sliver? What about doing the claims processing on your own or with someone else competent?

I wish you the best.

Thank you---I've only been without a job for 3 weeks. I had a little bit of a cushion so I'm doing ok for now.
While I'm grateful that there is public assistance available, it is almost scary how easy it is to obtain! Right now, I'm just concerned with getting the kids covered on insurance. I will figure something out for myself.

I was looking at other positions, and when my former employer found out--they kind of sped up the process for me.

The is apparently the new law. I helped an elderly neighbor fill out the appliction about 5-6 years ago after her husband died. At that time, you had to list your bank accounts as you could only have $X ( around $2000 if I remember correctly) in the bank.

I helped her renew twice since then and I know she did not have to list any bank accounts either time. I don't think there was ever any concern for the type of car she owned.

I would think that the millionaire would be held responsible for any income produced by that lottery money and that would stop his food stamps within a year.

You may be able to go to the unemployment for your loss of hours even if you are still working. I have heard this..... check it out, it's worth a shot!

If the amount of weekly unemployment is more than your weekly pay you can receive the difference and the first $100 of your pay doesn't count. At least here in Oregon that's how they do it.

Marilyn good luck on your job search. Don't get down about it. I looked for six months and now I have two jobs that I love so there is hope out there!
