What's the farthest distance you go to shop

on a regular basis? I'm asking how far away you go to the grocery etc. (not like the idea of "We drive 2 hours to get to a bigger city with shopping malls or a SamsClub" etc) just the everyday, "Oh, I need something from my grocery store/Walmart" kind of trip.

The real reason I ask is that while it doesn't seem an extremely long distance by car - 20 minutes or so to a favorite grocer that doubles coupons....
Could you walk it in the case of an emergency?

If the emergency struck while you were there, could you get home and do you know how long it would take you?

Did you know the average distance a person could walk in a day is around 20 miles if the person is fit and has the right shoes?

After the big Zombie Preparedness article broke on the CDC website (tongue-in-cheek style of course trying to just get people to build a preparedness bag)
CDC EPR | Social Media | Preparedness 101: Zombie Apocalypse - Blog
I thought it might be worth asking what all ya'll think is a good carry item in a GO-Bag.

My car bag always had the basic stuff - but I just added a package of mole skin, a fresh single use size of bug spray tube (may not be walking highway miles there), and a city map ( I rarely seek alternate routes so I don't know side streets well) if the Garmin isn't working.

What's worth packing in your opinion?

My everyday grocery is within walking distance - about 1/2 mile.

I don't have a car bag. I do have a map.

I am in walking distance of two grocery stores and a Walmart. I don't have a car bag, although I do have a case of water, a 12pk of coke, and snacks in my car (candies, small bags of chips and cookies) I don't have a map because I am so use to calling my dad every time I need directions.

Most stores are within walking distance. Not many extras in the car, it's full of softball stuff...

We have a Family Dollar and a Dollar General that would only take me about 5 minutes by bicycle to get to. Everything else would not be worth riding my bike too.We do have buses in our neighborhood but that would cancel out any coupon savings.

I'm walking distance to everything....a WalMart, a Target, a grocery store, several restaurants, 3 gas station/convenince stores. I live in a suburban area, so I'm close to everything. I don't keep anything in my car exept some hand lotion, purell and kleenex!

I live in the country. I shop at WinCo in Springfield which is 20 minutes away and the Costco in Eugene is about 40 minutes away. The only store here is the small convenience type store.

I have a first aid kit complete with gloves lots of them. I have matches, candles, water, snacks, blankets, snow chains, a pair of flip flops, and various other assorted things, feminine supplies, pens, paper, etc in case of emergencies. And when we are driving or flying anywhere I pack food. An Italian on the road will never starve to death lol!

Three miles one way to the nearest grocery store and I can not walk that good anymore so I would be out of luck if I had to. I don't carry much in my car. I have my AAA card, my cell phone, sweaters and coats in winter, jug of water in summer, umbrellas, and some bandaids in my purse. A girl scout I'm not. It seems like, after reading the other posts, I am woefully unprepared.

I live in a small town in the country, no grocery store. Closest grocery store is in the next small town 5 miles away, grocery store where I shop, large town, is 25 miles away (I shop when I finish working). I would know several different routes home if one were shut down. I grew up in the larger town and know it well, don't need a map.

In an emergency if I were at home we would be fine, we are pretty prepared for almost anything for several months with the exception of drinking water.

In my truck I carry a case of water, flashlight, a couple of tools, snacks, air compressor for flat tires, 3 blankets. DD plays softball that's why the blankets are in there, but there is also bats which could be used as protection if needed. Inhaler, hand sanitizer, bandaids, umbrella.

In my purse I carry Ibuprofen, Prednisone, Benadryl, hand sanitizer and bandaids.

I find that hard to believe. When I was a kid, I went on a 20 mile "Walk for Hunger' on crutches. I don't remember exactly how long it took, but under 1/2 a day for sure. Besides being on crutches, I was no athlete in general.

Within 2 miles, I have many drug stores and grocery stores. We could exist on what is in the house for a few months if we had to. We have months of rice, pasta, beans, and other canned stuff. We have discussed getting a generator for our frozen meats, but never get around to it. We have a lake and can purify water if need be.

In my car, I keep matches and candles, shovel, tool kit, CPR face and mouth protection, pepper spray, first aid kit, kitty litter, blankets, gloves, high power flashlight, cell phone charger, case of water, power bars. (We regularly drive 600 miles across the prairie. Snow and bad weather of all sorts have forced us off the road.)

You sound well prepared. Have you ever eaten or taken those freeze dried camping/hiking food packs they sell at Walmart? I think it's mountain house brand or something like that. And how much water do you carry? Do you have it in a special container or just regular water bottles?

I'm still tweaking the kit here. Thanks for sharing.

Just one of those 24 pack things. We don't plan on being stranded for more than 48 hours. We wouldn't be in a situation of us getting lost on a snowy, country road. Just the interstate. We keep candles are multi wick things to warm the interior of the car and to melt snow (or frozen water bottles). We take them out in the summer. The power bars we only keep in the winter. In summer, I put in a few bags of trail mix without chocolate and some granola bars.

I read a thing last year about a coffee can, toilet paper, and antifreeze. I am thinking of experimenting with that. It seems easy enough and is supposed to make more heat than the candles.
