need math formula help please

we have a homework equation that we do not know how to calculate
this come at the end of a series of equations: - min{x,4}

we can figure out the value of x we just do not understand the comma and how to use it to finish the equation, we assume min means minimum??

does this mean " minus whichever is the minimum: x or 4" ?
so if x = 2 we would subtract 2, but if x= 6 we would subtract 4??

been googling for a while with no clear help argh

thanks much

I think that this would be for graphing. y would be at least 4, but without knowing the equations, it is hard to say for sure.

Since braces usually denote sets, I think this theory of yours is correct. I assume you don't have a text book for the class that might explain this particular usage of braces.
