Wow!
Too bad he picked Ms. Sarah "I can see Russia from her" Palin for his running mate...he could have been POTUS

So many thoughts.

First is, why now does he regain some sense?

Second, I wonder if he is assuaging his guilt for putting Palin in the spotlight and thus shares some responsibility for the current state of affairs.

Third, I'm not sure that they want to hear that they are being lied to. I suspect they do know and don't care. Any means to an end.

I agree with your first and second points, but not the third.

Well, I think some know and don't care, and others just don't know.

Melissa this is from the article:

"McCain accused them of “deceiving” America into believing such a thing can pass the Senate: There are Republicans in both the House and Senate who are still pushing for another vote on the balanced budget amendment, even though “cut cap and balance,” which contains such an amendment, has already failed in the Senate. Tea Party GOP senators such as Jim DeMint and Rand Paul are calling on colleagues to reject John Boehner’s proposal for a two-tiered debt-ceiling increase and are instead demanding another vote on “cut cap and balance.” Meanwhile, House conservatives such as Mike Pence are also urging another vote on a modified version of a balanced budget amendment.
To such conservatives, McCain offered a simple answer: You’re in fantasy-land, and you’re doing your constituents a disservice by perpetuating the falsehood that such a thing can ever happen."

I read the article, and I understand what he's getting at. I consider myself a R constituent and I didn't feel deceived. What he's saying, if I'm not mistaken is that an idea should have been brought forward that everyone would agree upon. Not what they believe should happen, but what the Dems would agree to as well.

Maybe I'm being simplistic in my thinking, but I disagree with that. Yes, there needs to be compromise, but should one compromise away what one truly believes in?

And, what exactly do the Dems want to happen? Raise the debt limit so that our country can just continue to spend at will? Something HAS to give....

I think to some degree the whole thing has been blown out of proportion. We need to have a budget, but we've/they've known that for a long time. So now it's down to the wire and the country is in dire straights.

And why is it only the military and ss that will have to be cut?? Not getting that at all....

There has to be compromise on both sides simply because they appear to have different ideas about spending our money. I honestly believe that both sides are selfish and have totally lost any touch with reality. They seem to be, simply put, doing things (not specifically now but rather all along) that keep them prosperous, that protect corporations, and that further remove working class people from their money and their sense of security. One big problem is career politicians. While I understand it takes time to make connections and learn how things work there should be limits. The only way the US is ever going to get back on track is if we "fire" them all and start over. The system now does not allow for anyone whose thinking deviates from that of both the major parties to gain any kind of political "power". We are basically screwed no matter who we elect to anything the way things are now.

I totally agree Anna....I believe we are screwed as well. I feel sorry for the politicians that will be responsible for the demise of our economy and what it once was...on BOTH sides of the aisle. Although I think many of them are too self absorbed to believe that anything they do or believe will harm anyone.

There are so many things, morally and politically that have led us to this point....I just don't see any going back. So, like I've said before, I just feel like sitting back and enjoying the show. And quite a show it is. I will just lead my own life the best I can, making the best decisions I know how. I think that's all any of us can really do at this point.

At this point in my life while I will always continue to be a left-winged very liberal democrat I personally do not trust anyone at this time. Our country is in a huge financial mess, it does not matter who put us there, or who is in charge now, because all the damage is done. I truly fear for the future of our country and while I may not have all the answers, the sad fact is our country is in such a dispair, sp.. . I also believe many changes are needed, I also feel we must get out of Iran and stop worrying so much about other countries and take care of our own problems. Peace. Catherine

Um, I did not know we were in Iran.

Sorry, OP, but I believe you misrepresented McCain in your post title.

And regardless, McCain is just McCain. He doesn't speak for all conservatives - or even enough of them to get himself elected as President.

Ummm, we have not been in Iraq for 10 years. The first part of Operation Iraqi Freedom began on March 19, 2003.

And we have been in Afghanistan since October 7, 2001 due to the attacks on September 11th.

Please take the time out to know what is going on with those countries BEFORE spouting off that we need to be out of them. And no, I am not attacking you BUT take those dates very seriously since we are a military family........

Excuse me, but we have been overseas wherever for more then 10 years and it is very long time, places where we did not belong, should have never started any wars. Too many senseless millions of deaths both from our troops and the people who live in those countries. It is time to stop and bring all our troops home and stop spending our money, we need so much for our own country. For the record I really liked McCain thought he was a really nice guy, would have loved to see him and Obama work together. As far as Sarah Palin is concerned, cannot stand her literally in every true sense of the word.........Peace to our troops to come home soon to their loved ones.. Catherine

Did you even READ what I wrote in my reply? You are the last person to try & tell me how long we have been fighting overseas. My friends & family have been living through it and dealing with it each & every year.

Places we do not belong?? I do believe that there was a VERY good reason for going into Afghanistan which is 9/11!! Have you forgotten about that day??

And for the record, our troops do not need "fake" peace from you.........

Not part of the troublemakers as I am not the ONE that cannot admit when they are WRONG, I am someone that loves the military very deeply because of my ties to it. If I feel that someone whether it is on here OR in real life is being less than genuine in comments about the military, I will tell them straight up what I think about it. So I will stand by my thought of please do not say PEACE to them because YOU do not mean it!! It is a catch phrase for you and we all know it!

Not clear what the Iran reference is about. As for me "misrepresenting" anything - it's the title of the newspaper article.

I didn't claim McCain spoke for anyone. He probably would have received a lot more votes if he hadn't chosen Palin for his running mate. I'm sure he'll never forgive himself for that one.

Oh, and since I started this thread, can I ask that folks take the personal attacks and counter-attacks elsewhere? It's really old and boring -- on all sides of the argument.

Jujubee I made a mistake I said Iran instead of Iraq just another way to pick at me. For littlewolf, how dare you tell me I do not care about the troops, I have always spoken about the troops, who are you to tell anyone what to say, you have no right. I will continue to offer sincere peace and prayers and blessings to all the troops and the innocent people who live in these countries who have lost their lives... Peace and blessings. Catherine

Please take this "I said, you said" stuff to another thread.

A new thread. The bickering is boring and endless.

I have found ignoring it works well....as much as you can, anyway!

It doesn't matter how nice you ask, it won't stop. I have 2 "tweeners" and they bicker less.

Our economy is so screwed, and as such our future. I don't have any suggestions on making things better, but obviously what we're doing now (and what we have been doing) isn't working!

Red face

Sorry jujubee but I did not come to this thread to start any trouble, although wherever my name is mentioned trouble and bickering follows me and I am so dearly tired of it all. No one here has the right to tell me I cannot say or offer peace to the troops. Jujubee you should have said it to Littlewolf not me, she is the one who has the problem and is causing trouble.....Peace. Catherine

The only ones who bicker more might be the politicians. I wish both parties would stop their political posturing and game-playing. They need to solve problems, not position themselves for the next election.
