Wink Finally decided not to buy bottled water anymore

I decided that we were going to really try hard as a family and not buy any more bottled water. I feel that we have enough plastic bottles in this world here on earth and I no longer want to be apart of adding to the already overrun of plastic bottles. So we installed a brita water system in both kitchens and honestly the water tastes so good, we all as a family truly love it and we all feel so much better for doing so and wished we had done it sooner. I also purchased some nice large glass bottles and we fill them with the water, one has lemons and limes. The other has strawberries and peaches . The other one has cucumbers. They are all so delicious, we have tried many different fruits, it literally so delicious. Just really trying to be more green and safe our beautiful earth.. and we are saving so much money on not having to buy bottled water anymore...Peace..Catherine

I think that bottled water has it's place like for trips and to keep as an easy drink for the occasional company but day to day only drinking bottled water is a waste of money. We use a britta pitcher and it works for us but there are just the two of us. I think it's silly to use all that plastic for just drinking water at home. Of course we do recycle but that is still not the answer to just plain old not using it in the first place.

I keep bottled water on my nightstand for at night. I have cats and there is no way I am going to leave an open glass of water by my bed. I also take bottled water in the car with me. I drive in a convertible, with the top down, and I like to keep myself hydrated when I am out and about.

I have refillable water bottles that I use for the gym. At home I use filtered water from my refrigerator. I drink a lot of water everyday. So far today I have drank the equivalent of 4 20oz bottles (about 10 glasses) and before I go to bed I will drink at least another 5 glasses.

My husband takes bottles of water to work everyday. They do not have water coolers and the thought of filling his glass up in a bathroom sink is beyond disgusting.

We go through about 2 cases of water a week. We are not big soda / juice drinkers and we always have water with us.

Chelmo, why not just use refillable bottles for everything seeing how you use them for the gym?(not trying to be nasty, just curious)

Or why not just refill the store bought water bottles with filtered water and reuse them. Why would you have to keep buying them over and over? That's what we do, when we empty a soda bottle we just reuse it, clean it and reuse it. They last darn near forever.

We have good water here so I don't have to deal with filters and such. I almost always have some washed and filled bottles of water in the fridge to grab when I go out in the summer. Not so much the rest of the year. But I will reuse bottles as long as I can.

Something else I do, is when bottles are held together with those plastic thingys that are circled around the tops of 6 packs etc., I take them and cut them enough so that there are no holes left to end up around some bird or animals head or foot. I think those things should be outlawed.

We use filtered water from the refrigerator. I never buy water in bottles, but will keep ones that I'm given (meetings and such). I wash them, refill them and have them on hand for grabbing on the run. We also have several metal water bottles that we refill.

I went to target and purchased these really nice drinking bottles, they came in all different colors and the cover is really nice and they have a built in straw, so need for plastic bottles anymore. However if the need arises to purchase bottled water if we are out for some reason I would do it, but no more buying bottled water like I did, what a sincere waste, when I think back... Peace... I think there should be a deposit required on all bottles, glass or plastic and that way most would get recycled. When I was a kid we made candy money by collecting bottles to turn in for the deposit. There is really no good reason not to do that, except the grocery stores don't want to deal with it and the companies that put their product in the containers don't want to deal with it either. Shame on them.

I have often marveled at the marketing genius of getting people to pay so much for water in plastic. I mean, who would have thought? But they did, they bottled, others bought and swore by it, and now slowly they see how foolish and wasteful the whole thing was to depend and carry on about.

I think we have a hand "thing". If we don't have a cell phone, overpriced coffee, or bottle of water in our hands, we aren't cool or we aren't dressed...........

In Oregon we have a deposit on pop, beer and water bottles. The new bottle bill goes into effect soon and covers more items.

That may be true for some people however some of us just like to keep our water consumption up and the water in bottles (especially if it's mountain spring water and yes there are real springs where they bottle the water naturally) is cleaner than the water in some communities. For example recently (within the last six months or so) a list was printed of communities in the US that have a high chromium (carcinogen) level in their water. And many communities have a high chlorine content. I drink a combination of sink and bottled water after some soul searching. I am always on the go and at six bottles for a dollar for pure mountain spring water I can stay hydrated. Everyone in my town and the surrounding community has times when the water doesn't run clear so it can't be the individual plumbing. As for the hand thing that might be true for some people. However you don't everyone's story. I wouldn't be too far from my cell phone and that is due to working in a school where there was a shooting. That has completely changed my ideas on safety, connecting with loved ones, etc. And it's stupid to pay for a cell phone and not have it within reach if you really need it. I personally don't know anyone who holds something in their hands to look cool.

Ahh but there are filters for tap water and have been several reports of the "real spring" water not being so real or so good or so different.

You have brought the one time shooting incident up before. While I do hope people are never in that position, the liklihood (sp?) or chance is very small of a reality. Yes, I have friends who have their cells for supposed emergencies, and yet that reality is they just have to have them.

When someone has to have something in their hands all the time, it's not normal. When driving, it should be the steering wheel; when in the checkout lane, it should be the method of payment; when at a funeral, it should be a tissue; etc - not water or a cell phone, etc. And in general, it should be nothing.

The likelihood may be very small but that means nothing to someone who has experienced an extremely traumatic experience that not only changed the lives of many individuals but also a whole community. I agree with you about the driving part. And the funeral part. Don't keep it in your hand literally but keep it close at hand. At the very least if one of these situations occur you can get a last message to your loved ones.

Bobbles have a water filtration thing in it. It's a reusuable water bottle found at Target among other places. Another good option.

Red face

Well everyone here by now, knows how I truly feel about the cell phone issue and especially texting. This has always been a personal view on my part. I just plainly do not see the reason why we must be so attached to our cell phones. Again it is my personal view and more so with the texting, I just do not get it, example, my parents do not text they are 79 years old, my father in law is 83, so I cannot text them because they cannot text me back. My husband does not even text. So right there are 4 main people whom I only call on the cell phone. The others are my children, they know I refuse to learn to text, I want to be able to hear their voice and truly know they are okay. It seems like if the cell phones are not in their hands and this goes for everyone, people cannot function. Again as far as expensive coffee, which at almost 3.00 times that by 30 and that is a lot of money at the end of the month. For me whom hates coffee, yuck even the smell I cannot imagine spending that money. However that is a personal issue and if you can afford Starbucks every day then enjoy, it is your money, life is too short. For me I am a huge tea drinker and with all the tea coupons I get and use I only make my own tea never purchased on a daily basis... Some interesting ideas for sure.. Peace. Catherine

for anything that is considered a "luxury" or "extravagance" anybody can find reasons to justify their expense.

I love my cell phone. I have it with me pretty much 24/7. I make no bones about it---I like the sheer convenience of it. (I will say I have had the same exact phone for over 3 years! I don't like the touch screens or the "smart" phones--simply want a phone I can receive and make calls on and text on...)

Don't do the bottled water. I either drink the city tap water, or use a counter-top filtrator. I have yet to drink any bottled water that tastes better than "normal" water. I think buying bottled water is a waste of time, money and resources.

I don't do Starbucks on a regular basis--I think the last time was well over a year ago! Too expensive, too snooty and takes too much time.

I guess my point is--it's what your priorities are.

I all but stopped drinking bottled water also. Didn't see the value. About the only time I drink bottled water now is when outside playing tennis.

I do buy and drink bottled water, although I also buy the refillable 1 gallon containers from Culligan. I don't like the taste of our city water. I just don't. I do like to drink water, though, so I purchase what I like to drink. I drink almost a gallon a day, so for me, it's completely worthwhile. I've tried the Brita system; I've tried the water bottles with filters; we have a water filter system for our house. None of it tastes as good to me as what I buy. So... I will keep buying. As for bottled water, I keep one by my bed at night. We also use them for our lakehouse and when we are out on the boat. The water at the lake is from a well and not safe to drink. We do recycle and actually bring all of the recycling home from the lake because they don't have a program out there.

I also love my cell phone. I recently upgraded to a smart phone and it is fabulous for me for work. I can be in touch without having to be sitting in front of my computer. This has made it possible for me to run out during the day without panicking that I am missing something important. I also like to text. I love being able to get a quick message to or from family or friends. I might be on a conference call or something and can still communicate. I could certainly live without it, but it is a convenience that I appreciate.

Had to add my 2 cents on this one. I wish I had thought up selling water in bottles!! LOL That said, I buy bottled water only for my son to take to school for lunch. Better water than just about anything else. He is a Jr in HS and will only take brown baggable stuff. They recycle the bottles at school. At home we drink tap water that has been refrigerated topless to allow the chlorine to escape. I just cannot understand folks drinking only bottled water. I have neighbors that spend good $'s to have water delivered to their home when our public well water is just as good if it just sits open for a few hours.

I applaud those few states that require a deposit on plastic bottles and cans. If you hit people in the pocketbook, they all of a sudden will recycle. It's sad but true. Bottled water is the biggest racquet out there and such a waste as it seems most people just toss their little plastic bottles. I wish a great majority of folks would just boycott bottled water so they discontinue making it. Doubt that will ever happen.

When I lived in Mass I did not mind drinking the water as much. It is the purest water and has no taste. I live in Florida now and I can taste the chemicals right through a brita filter! It is purely disgusting!!!!! I buy the bottled water because even the kids notice the difference and refuse to drink water unless its spring water without the after taste. To each their own I guess. If it works for you than it works for you. I do not have an issue with cell phones. I just wish people would not text and drive.

Another point: think of all the people who work in the bottled water industry: those who make the bottles and caps; those who make the labels, those who work in the bottling plant; those who deliver the bottles. We have a high rate of unemployment with no hope in sight do we really need 10 or 20 thousand more people out of a job?

No one keeps a job out of sympathy. It's supply and demand. If people didn't buy bottled water, the jobs would be gone.

Many jobs have vanished thanks to technology, robotics, innovation, and changing needs. If, and I say if, the bottling manufacturing positions are even in the USA...........I don't know but perhaps they aren't. I don't have a bottle to go look at. Your question is easily answered no, but not one I would be willing to contribute to for the sake of unemployment.

Same here on Starbucks.....I always hate the way they say "what can we get started for ya???" Um, what happened to the old standard of "how may I help you???"

I buy bottled water, but I also refill the empties with city water and Gatorade, no problems with our city water. We go to ALOT of softball games and it's 110 degrees outside and we HAVE to stay hydradrated. I keep the big cooler with bottles in the truck and carry the small cooler that holds 6 bottles to the bleachers (then just keep refilling the small cooler as needed). This saves us tons of money, with bottled water being $1.00 and Gatorade being $1.50 at the concession stand.

I also carry the small cooler to work with me in the truck, when I work and take 4 bottles of water and a Gatorade. Saves money from having to stop to buy several drinks.

I buy whatever water is on sale. This week the Nestle Pure Life was $2.49 a case with coupons and on sale.

Plus we use bottled water for our school softball team during tournaments. Hubby and I provide a cooler full of bottled water and Gatorade (not refilled, lol) for our daughters school softball team during tournaments which is only 3-5 times a season. It's just something we have done for them for the last 3 years and will probably do it for the next 3 years until she graduates.
