Earthquake in Virginia.. is everyone ok

We just heard there was a 5.9 earthquake that centered in Virginia and was felt as far as NY. Is everyone in the area ok? I felt it here in NJ. Hope all is well with everyone

I was just posting that too... Bet that was scary!

Freaky and alarming combining that with the idea that worldwide activity is on slight up tick as well. 6.0 or better earthquakes are happening more so than in past years. This could be a heavy year for activity.

Waiting to hear from my kids in Lynchburg. I think they are fine, just curious if my little Michiganders felt their first earthquake.

I guess people are freaking, but apparently there is no reason to panic.

I am in the DC area and it was scary. I was in the basement of my school learning a new computer program when we all heard a rumbling sound. Then everything was moving. My principal is from CA so she knew right away. No real damage that I can see but all government buildings and everyone is going home. Cell service is patchy. It reminds me too much of 911.

Disruption of services will most probably cause the biggest headaches closest to the epicenter. You know like "we can't run the train until we check all the tracks" and "hey let's detour the truck traffic because this very old bridge now has a new fracture in it" -

I would hate to see power plant have issues but sometimes they hiccup during an event. I feel bad for the people that rely on that power to maintain their everyday health.

No Panic - Just extended headache without the proper safety net of supplies in place.

Update when you get word from your family...curious what did they experience?

For those of you who don't know, you can buy earthquake insurance with your homeowners policy. It is not expensive at all. DH and I live in an area which is extremely unlikely to have earthquakes, but we have had the insurance for years. People laugh at us ~ but you never know!

Felt it here quite distinctly in western Ma. I was in my mail truck stopped at a box and it started a bobbing motion. We had an F-3 tornado here 6/1, also a very unlikely spot for such an occurance. You just never know what is going to happen.

My son is in Annapolis and said that they felt it hard. There is some damage to the buildings on the Yard at the academy and classes were canceled. He texted me right away with "HUGE EARTHQUAKE!!!!!! SO SCARY!!!!" LOL! Later when he called, he was all bravado about how they all evacuated. One kid, from California in Chem ran to the doorway, but the rest of the mids just sat there at first staring and then ducked under their desks. Then when all the shaking was over, even though they aren't allowed to run in uniform, they all raced out of the building to safety.

Heard from my kids...Ds was on his motorcycle, and DD was in her car. Both of them thought there was something wrong with their vehicles!! lol DD was actually calling her FIL to get the number to the mechanic....then she walked into the bank and everyone was in an uproar. She was feeling a bit sheepish after that!! lol

My principal is from CA so she made us stand next to the pillars in the basement of the school. After 15 minutes, we went outside because she said that after shocks happen usually in the first 15 minutes.

Thanks for the update. Glad they were able to have a giggly moment "after" the danger passed.

Glad to hear from everyone else as well! Keep the updates rolling in!

Some government buildings are closed. DC and Prince George's county schools are closed (they were the only two open). The Washington monument has a crack at the top and the Washington Catherdral lost the tops of several spires. The damage is not bad but there is some damage in the area.

the walls shook and things fell. there was some breakage. it was weird to see the way the walls in the corner swayed. we are about 75 miles from the center of the quake. there have been 3 aftershocks. the highest a 4.2.

I was on the Cape Cod Canal and felt just a little back and forth motion....almost like when you wake up dizzy. I thought briefly that I was getting sick. It wasn't until we got to the restaurant for lunch that we saw CNN was launching the story and I realized that I had felt my first ( and hopefully last) earthquake.
