Veggies in Your Garden Yet?

We have been eating sugar snap peas, yellow pear tomatoes, big red tomatoes, zucchini, from our garden and green beans, onions, blueberries, tomatoes (yellow & red), cabbage from other people's gardens.
I'm still waiting for my bell peppers and my one little watermelon is doing well looks almost ready to pick. We have enough pumpkins to give every kid on our block a big one and several little ones.
Remember last year because of the weather gardens in some areas did not do well? Ours didn't. This year when we put fresh organic dirt in our raised beds, our neighbors took the old impotent (we thought) dirt from last year and used it in in their flower bed mixed with manure. Lo and behold many volunteer tomato plants sprung up! They are getting more tomatoes from those than we got last year from the original plants.

We actually are winding down. Yellow squash and the big tomatoes are just about gone but the roma tomatoes are still growing.. Cukes are going crazy this year.....just no way to tell from year to year.

I didn't get anything. I only have tomatoes...it was too cool, then got way too hot for an extended period of time. So, nothing.

I also tried some basil and mint, both died.

At our old house I had a raised bed and got tons of stuff every year. I loved it. At this house, I don't have raised beds, just a mulched area along the side of the house.

I give up...well until next year. I'll probably try again...as frustrating as it's been!

I live in a climate that does not support citrus trees outside. If I chose to grow citrus fruit, I would have to do it inside.

I'm surprised that your climate supports citrus trees outside, that's why I asked

Our apple trees are not great this year
plus the hurricane did lots of damage to the hardwood, but the lemon and orange trees are fabulous

Like I said I have several lemon tree's and while our summers are not long we have been getting lemons, I also have 2 apple tree's, however for us they are not the best apples, they are kinda small and they seem to fall very early and turn brown so fast....I would dearly love to have a orange tree, they are so delicious...However the tomatoes and the basil and the parsley and my neighbor's fresh garlic does make for some homemade delicious sauce............peace to all. wow...wish you knew what sort of tree it is. Maybe you could post a picture of the tree and someone here could ID it.
If there's a type of lemon tree that will grow in your agricultural "zone", perhaps it would even grow here!

I almost forgot about my herbs. I have Rosemary, lemon basil, & basil. It's interesting the differences in gardens from everywhere. I'm wondering about Phoenix. It was sooo hot there that no children were playing outside and I didn't see a garden in any of the surrounding suburbs.

I have a huge Rosemary plant it looks more like a hedge after several years. My DH grew corn, heirloom and Roma tomatoes, green beans, bell peppers and zucchini plus basil, sage, thyme and oregano. Most of the vegetables are finished for this season. We have a lemon tree we bought at a nursery 2 yrs ago and it only has 3 lemons on it. For the $30 we paid for it I could have bought alot of lemons at the store LOL.

Marilyn the name of the Lemon tree's we have in our yard are small, they are called Meyer Lemon Tree's. They are quite strong and they can withstand the cold weather and abuse. I would never ever post any private pictures here anymore. If you like you can google them and take a look for yourself. Like I said they were in the back yard when we purchased the house.....Peace and blessings........Catherine

Are your lemons sweet? I bought a dwarf Meyers lemon tree 2yrs ago and only has only produced 3 lemons- one with a worm hole and the other 2 are just now turning yellow.

Our roses are also having a second blooming. The two bushes in front of the house yielded quite a crop this year and now I've noticed some new ones are there. What a summer!

Our tomatoes did worse than usual this year, and that means 0 tomatoes. My husband planted the same variety at his mom's house and at work, and though small in size, they produced pretty well. We got about 4 baby cukes off of each of the three plants we have. Even our parsley did crappy this year, as a matter of fact I don't even know where it is right now. Our one big winner is a basil plant that was in a patio pot with a tomato. While we were on vacation, it killed the tomato plant and really took off. It is huge. We have 4 lilacs from which I have had one bloom in 15 years. Our clematis usually has two or three blossoms in total also showed us nothing this year. Obviously no geen thumbs here, plus crappy soil and not enough sun.

We were still getting some smallish tomatoes until today. We pulled the plants and cleaned the garden out. The skin on them was getting thick and they just were not that great.

We are still however, getting a lot of peppers.

So far Cheryl I have not have major problems with our little lemon tree's of course you do not get a lot like you would if you were to have large lemon tree's. Yes there have been some summer's where the lemons were better, however I love lemons I put them in my water, in my tea, I use them in many recipes and even clean with them. Lemons are wonderful peace........Catherine
