I didn't see much news coverage on this..

Memorials Set As Former Marine Gets Medal Of Honor | Fox News

I didn't see this on the news this morning, I just heard a little news clip about it on the radio on my drive into work. IMO this should be front page news all over this country. I also feel that since tv stations interrupt programing to bring us news about lesser important issues, they should interrrupt programing to put Mr. Meyer's ceromony on.

I agree with you that it should be front page news! Sadly, I think many have become "oblivious" to what is going on with the war and the things that our military members go through almost daily.

This is, in part, because there is no draft. With the draft many more families were involved. The more families affected, the more demand there is for coverage. That's why there were protests during Vietnam. Most people had a family member either drafted, in danger of being drafted, or knew others who did. Right now, I can not think of a friend or relative that has anyone serving in the two wars. I have a step nephew who serves in the Guard, but he has not seen any combat. I only have one friend who has a son in the military and he is pushing 60 and will no doubt retire in the next few years. He is not combat, he is an interrogator, who trains others to do this job.

Another factor is a remnant of the Bush blackouts of the news gathering about the war(s). No pictures of the coffins being unloaded. Greatly reducing the allowing of reporters to follow the troops. There was a lot of things that didn't get covered like they should and the public loses interest, which is what the Bushies wanted. If everyone forgot we were at war then we wouldn't protest the fact. It worked.

If the American public is not asked to sacrifice, then they don't care. They say they do, but it's just lip service because that is what is expected of them. If you actually require this commitment and they have to put their butts or their children's or grandchildren's butts on the line then the sacrifice has a face.

I think another factor is that time is so limited with todays life styles that people just don't watch the news that much and they certainly aren't picking up newspapers and reading them. Which brings me back to the draft. If they had a reason to know what was happening, they would demand that it be covered.

Whew - thanks! I'm glad to know it's Bush's fault!

I have a son serving as a Marine officer. He is awaiting his date to go out for his third deployment. He was in the Anbar Province during the surge. He has good friends from the Academy who are over there now...he has at least one friend who is deployed at any given time.

It is true that people who do not have someone directly involved does not think about the fact that we still have people over there in danger daily.

There was a sign another Marine Mom sent me a few years ago that said "Our Marines and Soldiers are at war while America is at the mall"

It means more to the country if everyone had someone who was there, on their way there, just came back, or was in danger of going to Afghanistan.

I know there are people who say they support the troops. Everyone says that. If we really supported the troops, wouldn't we read about Dakota everywhere? Wouldn't everyone know Travis Manion's name and when he died? Brendan Looney?

It makes me sad more than angry that we speak about how we need to be in Afghanistan and Iraq but it is my son and the other marines and soldiers who go willingly and those people who say "we support the troops" but don't want to encourage their children to join the battle.....I have friends who have told me that they would never allow their sons to join the service because they do not want them to go to war but they believe we are fighting a just war and they will send a care package at the holidays.

This is obviously a sore subject today with me. My boy called me yesterday to let me know that his name is on the list to go to Afghanistan but he doesn't know the date yet. My youngest son is going to graduate in two years and he will deploy immediately if he doesn't go into Aviation. I feel sick to my stomach already.

Just venting.......ignore me.....totally off topic.

I'm sorry usnamom. I know you must be tied in knots over this. It's so hard to send them anywhere, and even more to war.

usna, I honestly can't imagine what that's like. Both of my boys have physical issues that would keep them from being 'optimal soldiers', for lack of a better term, so it's never been on my radar on a personal level to have to think in those terms. I admire you and all those who have to live in those shoes on a daily basis.

I know FoxNews is not a favorite of everyone on this board, but I will say... they do a fairly decent job keeping the troops and their whereabouts in the spotlight. I don't watch other networks often enough to have a clue what they do or don't do, but because of the Fox coverage, they're never far from my awareness.

Red face

Wildwood totally 100 percent agree with you it was Bush's and Cheney's fault of the war, for the millionth time we had no business to enter into that country, trillions and trillions more have been spent, while our country steeps lower and lower in a huge financial mess. Our country is in so much trouble, we need to stop worrying about other countries and focus on ourselves... Usnamom as always your special to me, I feel for you so deeply as a mom I cannot imagine any of my children being oversea and in that terrible country and fearing for their lives each and everyday... While our country may be safer each day more and more Osama bin Laden's and Saddam's are being born and raised to hate our country. It is a vicious cycle that will never end. It time to bring our troops home, and let our troops protect our country here on our soil. Always take more measures to tighten our security, ..God bless our troops and keep them safe till they return. To op tragically it seems the news coverage reports on issues that are not that important. Anything to do with the war, and anyone who has lost their lives protecting America, should always come first always and forever... peace and blessings.........Catherine

I don't know if there was coverage this morning or afternoon or not. I was not home. But the national news this evening, NBC and CBS both covered the story. NBC's coverage was pretty short, but CBS did an interview and spent quite a bit of time on the story.

I had heard of this quite a bit myself. I am pretty sure it was on World News (ABC Affiliate) or the NBC Nightly News....I switch from time to time. DH reinlisted in the "Hall of Heroes" in the Pentagon, so it struck a chord with me. The room is quite small and I could not see a lot of film personnel in there, in addition to all the family members and "dignitaries" that are there to show face. That might be why it was not filmed/on TV??? Not sure.

I think the amount of coverage depends on where you live, also. I am fairly close to a military base so we have quite a bit of coverage in our local newspaper. This story was inside the front page of our local paper.
