| a group wants to get rid of PSA test for men
My husband and I are upset with a group that is recommending that they stop doing PSA tests on men to check for prostate cancer. This is the same group that recommended that woman over 40 not to have a mammogram. They said that the PSA test causes unnecessary tests and has not been shown to help men survive prostate cancer. Right now it is the only test that gives an indication that a man has prostate cancer. Most men that have prostate cancer have no symthoms. Women with breast cancer have a lump that can be felt in most cases.
My husband went for his annual PSA test about 5 1/2 years ago. It had gone up 2 points so our doctor said to see a specialist. He did a digital check and said he felt something. So he went for a biopise (sp.) and it was positive. The doctor thought it was small. Next he went to have his prostate removed. The results were a small tumor but it was a 3TB tumor. One stage away from being in other organs. Because his father and grandfather both had prostate cancer later in life and died from it, he did hormone theraphy and radiation. He was 54. I am happy to say that 5 years later, he is cancer free thanks to the PSA test.
