Epic Oct storm=1 week no power

Me and a couple million people in NE had a freak October snowstorm that dumped 10 to 20 inches of snow on our trees that still had alot of leaf cover. The result was a ton of downed trees and limbs that brought the power lines with them. DH and I slept in our cellar the night of the storm and listened to about 10 hours of trees cracking, breaking, and falling. Several large limbs hit our roof. We lost two trees, and hundreds of huge branches.
Power out for 7 full days for us. Power company kept telling everyone daily that power would be up that day. Many people did not work due to power outage, But DH worked many hours as a firefighter and the PO was delivering mail as usual over and under tree limbs and power lines. There was no time to get anything done at home. Lows at night in the 20's. House low was 45 degrees.
Power came up yesterday. Warm and well lit house feels so good. Time to get back to normal.

I read and saw pictures of this epic fall storm online. Tremendous damage from all the fallen trees and branches. They were saying 3 million households without power and for a week? Did you actually stay in your home or leave?

About 20 years ago in Nebraska, they had a similar freak ice storm in October. Same thing with the fallen tree and branches. The city actually cancelled halloween trick or treating for the kids.

We got caught in that storm too. We "only" lost power for 3 nights though - Sat through Tues. Tuesday morning, it was so cold in the house I could see by breath! I was so happy when I got back from work on Tuesday evening and we had power. I don't think I could have taken another night in the freezing cold!

I read that an elderly woman (86) was found dead wrapped in a blanket. So sad. Her son found her. I know I don't know all of the details, but how could you leave your elderly mother alone in those conditions?

A lot of towns postponed or canceled it here. In our town, it was rescheduled for tonight.

We stayed in our home. All of our relatives, when we could finally contact them, in several communities around here were without power as well. Got to MIL's Sunday am after the storm right after my SIL had justed picked her up. SIL has wood stove, so MIL spent the week there. I fear there will be more deaths discovered. There are still thousands of families without power as of today. Several deaths occurred due to carbon monoxide poisoning from people rigging up illegal heating devices. There was a shelter open at our local Jr High. Since the power co kept telling us repair was imminent, we stayed put.
We are buying a generater this week. Never want to experience this again. We had lost power in the summer for nearly three days when an unprecedented tornado tore through our area. I though that was bad, but this was much worse. I could see my breath in our house as well. We have a regular fireplace that provided some comfort at night if you were directly in front of it. We did have hot water from natural gas which was a blessing. We were able to shower and also created hot water bottles with 2 liter soda bottles which we put in our bed at nite and they were wonderful. We have a gas cooktop so we were able to cook in the house as well. Yesterday, threw out all our food. Will begin yard clean up today. I am baking a cake for Ds, turns 17 tomorrow. Good news is I finally got to defrost my freeezer in the basement!

Halloween cancelled here. It is just too dangerous to have kids walking around with all the sharp branches on ground, branches still dangling from trees, damaged trees, and wires strewn about. I am finding that some of my customers are distributing halloween candy to their neighbors in the mailboxes! I am glad I Bought individual packs of cookies to distribute this year. They will last quite a while and better to have than candy.

We lost power for 3 days also, I have to say it was one of my most unpleasant experiences. Halloween was postponed until Friday here, schools were closed for 3 days. We stayed in the house and could also see our breath in the house. I was so grateful when the power came back on. Lost everything in the freezer and fridge but fortunately my homeowner's covered that loss.

I've been so out of the loop. I hope they can get it under control soon. What a mess.
