My SIL lives on the east coast (I live in the midwest). She (21 yrs) and her husband (25 yrs) and their 1-year-old son moved to a different state this summer for my BIL's job. She is also expecting their second child at the end of December. She is very lonely out there as they live in a third story apartment in a neighborhood where she really stands out (my IL are white, they live in a predominately african american middle class neighborhood). Nobody has attempted to befriend her (in fact they go out of their way to avoid her despite her attempts to be friendly) and she can't go anywhere because they only have one car and BIL uses it to go to work. She can't lug a stroller down 3 flights of stairs being 8 months pregnant. When BIL comes home from work, he spends the evening getting ready for the next day (he is an elementary school teacher). Do you guys have any ideas that would help her get through her days? I just feel so bad for her and I live so far away from her so I can't really help her. I'm not super close to her because of the whole distance thing we never really got to know eachother that well but I would like to do what I can to help. Any ideas?

I've had a Foreman Grill for about six years. I've done about 85% of my cooking on it, but I've never burnt myself. Probably because I don't use it as a pillow.

I would buy her some phone cards so that she could freely talk to her old friends and family.
If she has a computer you could get her a NetFlix subscription, but that does not allow her to have a conversation, though.
Also, it would be wonderful to find a church home where she can meet other people.

Once she has her baby and is able to get around, things will get better for her. She could join a church and befriend people there who will help her. Which city is she in? She could join a mothers and child group-maybe her husband can ask some of his colleagues at work. It is hard to make friends when you live in an apartment buidling and not in a neighborhood with houses or smaller apartment buildings, but it is not impossible. Sometimes people are suspicious of the motives of white Americans because of the way that they have been treated in the past by them, but remember that there are good people of all races and ethnic groups. Once she can get out, it will be a lot easier for her.Just tell her to hang in there, it will get better.
