What do you do with ashes from your fireplace?

I just cleaned out the fireplace and am not sure what to do with the ashes. I know that some people spread them in their yard. Pros? Cons?

If dh has papers to burn, he pours them into our firepit and burns the papers. Otherwise he just puts them in our gardens to be tilled in the spring.

You can use ashes on driveways in winter - they will reduce the icy skidding

Well, we dont have a wood fire place anymore <since last year> but I can tell you what NOT to do with them.....

Do not put what you feel are very cool ashes in a plastic container on the edge of your porch while you wait for hubby to come home. Why? Because when he comes home he could have a pile of ashes with melty plastic to clean up.

OOPS! Thank god that I didnt leave them near the house and that we didnt have a wooden patio.

Darlene

PS. We used to put our ashes around the trees in the yard.

We have 2 fireplaces, one in the dining room upstairs that's gas, and one downstairs that's wood - because of our son who has asthma, we don't use the wood fireplace much anymore, but we used to make fires every night. Matt let the ashes cool, put them in a covered bucket and kept them in the back of the van. He was very thankful for them when he got off work about 3 years or so ago and got stuck in the parking lot where they had plowed. Some ashes behind the tires and he was out in no time.

And as crazy as it sounds, you can offer them on your local Freecycle group.

Our fireplace has a little trap door on the floor that opens and we just sweep all the ashes into there! We have lived in our house 13 years and it has never been near full so who knows how deep the hole is or where the ashes go!
