Angry Listen to what Happened to my son today on the School Bus....

DS is in 6th grade band and plays drums. He has to cart his snare back and forth each day because the schools here don't provide ANY instruments. So every day, he has to put his drum in the storage compartment under the bus. He reminds the driver each day that he has to get his drum out. Today, there were other instruments under there so he had to take out somebody else's drum, pull his out of the back, then put theirs back in. He was in the process of putting theirs back in and was half-way inside the compartment when the driver started to PULL AWAY!!! His very large backpack and drum case were both sitting there on the ground, so if the driver had even glanced at her mirror, she would have seen him. She stopped when some kids on the bus screamed for her to stop. And fortunately, according to my son, she pulled away very slowly (usually-they do not). The door on the compartment came down and scratched his back but that was the only injury he received.

He could have been killed! I realize that she just forgot that he was under there but it's obvious that she never even checked her mirrors!! How scary is this??? My son is TINY for his age (11) and is no match for the door of this great big huge compartment so we're very lucky he just got a scratch. He said that she apologized to him and asked him if he was okay.

I immediately called the district transportation office and told them what happened and made them fill out an incident report. I did tell them that she apologized and that I realize it was just an accident...but OMG--he could have been killed by her carelessness!!! They were very very apolgetic and equally concerned about it.

I'm trying to put this past us and not think about it. He's not riding the bus tomorrow at all because of things we have going on, so a few days distance from this will help me. I am quite ill, suffering from major depression (geez, I didn't have this all going on when we last had this board--you wouldn't believe what all I've had gone on health-wise since we lost the family board) and the slightest bit of stress makes my brain go into a total shut down so I'm trying not think about any of this.

Thanks for 'listening' to my vent.....I feel better having someone to tell it to. DH travels and is gone right now.

Janet

Janet,
You have to remember the most important thing... Your son is ok. That is number 1. Next you do need to persue this with the school the driver was probably shaken up enough to never forget to look in her mirrors but she needs to take a safety class. She should actually be suspended but I would be happy with her taking a class. I am so sorry this happened what a scary thing to have to deal with yourself. Don't let this get you down your son is ok you need to keep the "brain on" so this is handled the proper way. Good Luck Keep your head up

Whew, that must have been terrifying for your son. Glad that he is ok. I think you did right by reporting it. The childrens safety is most important.

that's terrible! I'm so glad your son was not badly hurt.

I would also tell the band director at his school what happened. He might be able to prevent this from happening through different channels you can't reach.

That is awful.
I know people make mistakes- but being a school bus driver is such a serious job.
I'm hope she learned a big lesson because of this!

I'm so glad your son is all right! The driver's job is to make sure the children are safe. She should have made sure he was in your yard (or wherever he gets off) before even attempting to move that bus. Around here that would have made our local news! We've had so many problems with bus drivers leaving children ON the bus after the route is over (child is asleep), children getting run over by the bus because their bookbag got caught in the door and the driver wasn't paying attention -- so many things.

Your son must really love playing his instrument to carry it off and on the bus everyday. A lot of kids wouldn't do that. That really shows devotion!!

As a formal drum player in the band, I know how hard it is to tow that darn drum back and forth to school. I had great arm muscles in the 7th and 8th grade LOL. The bus driver made a stupid mistake that luckily turn out OK. You did the right thing calling the transportation office, maybe this will be a wake up call to pay a lot more attention to what she is doing. Glad your son is OK.
