We opened ours through our bank, but it's probably cheaper through Etrades or somewhere like that. The thing with stocks is if you aren't activly trading they usually charge you a fee, like $50 a year for maintanence, you can ask about that. Honestly the best way to invest with little money is through mutual funds, some have low minimums and you can add monthly with direct deposit through your bank account, or whenever you have some extra cash.

If you have a relative who works for any place like that, ask if they have a family plan! My sister works for Putnam and we get NO FEES for LIFE on our investments when we buy through them.

HTH, not exactly what you were asking, sorry.

A good bet for a small investor are DRPS (directly from the company) some will also reinvest your dividends without fees (DRIPS) You have to do some research but it's worth it.

Another good way to go but make sure you understand the account thoroughly

Not sure what "small" investment means to you but the big brokerage houses can eat away at small accounts until there's no profit/or even investment left in a good market so make sure going in that you know all charges now/future and have them in writing. If you don't understand something bug them until you do - it's your money and their job
