Do candles "lose" their smell?

I know this may sound like a really dumb question, but I bought a few yankee votive candles the other day. I intended to just melt them in a little holder over a beverage warmer and now the one I put in there doesn't seem to have any smell. I've used it for about a week. I don't know that much about candles, so I didn't know if there was something in them that had evaporated.

Thanks

Most candles are made with scented oil infused into the wax. As the candle burns away the scent is released as the candle burns. If you take a candle, take out the wick, and melt it in a pot the wax ment but not burn away. As the wax melts the scent is realeased. Have you been warming the same votive all week or are you having problems with a new votive?

Most candles will last sitting in the house forever. You may not be able to smell the scent by smelling the candle after a while but if you burn the candle it will/should still smell. At least Partylite is like that. I have had candles sitting in my living room for over 2 years. I gave them to my mom and she said they smelled wonderful when she burned them. However if you melt a votive in a warmer (the kind with the glass bowl over a tealight) the scent eventually fade but the wax will remain.

I hope this answered your questions. If you have anymore feel free to ask.

Thanks for your reply. I've had other cheap candles that lasted much longer and this one was a yankee candle. I guess I expected it to last longer.

I have always been a big yankee candle fan but the last one I bought didnt seem to have much scent at all. I burned the 22oz farmhouse apple and I was really disappointed. The smell didnt release until the candle was near the bottom Another friend of mine said her yankee candles havent been smelling as strong as they used to either

In my experience (and I'm something of a Yankee Candle purist), when I've actually burned Yankee candles, I get very predictably great scent results.

However, if I simply melt their candles or tarts over tealights, the scent fades after each use. I used to think this was to most efficient way of maintaining the scents of Yankee wax longer, but I found that it isn't. While the tart doesn't burn off, the scent does.

I've gone back to burning the Yankee candles rather than melting them repeatedly.

Incidentally, I also like Village candles!! These are becoming a close "second runner-up" for me!
