Does anyone else adopt a family for Christmas?

We have been adopting a family for Christmas for some time now. We provide their Christmas dinner and gifts to the children. When I speak about it to others, they look at me oddly and I can't seem to find anyone else that does this. I do know people who work thru a church to provide blankets, etc to homeless but we work with the family directly. It is such a joy to share with our kids that not everyone has what we do.

Just wondering if anyone else supports/adopts a family over Christmas. I'm begining to feel like the odd man out and that is rather sad to me.

We adopt a different family every year. Our battered womens shelter provides us with a family. We too do their entire Christmas- dinner and gifts. I have my children do all of the shopping. They know what it is for and yes they have asked why Santa doesn't visit this family. I tell them that he does but Santa of course doesn't bring everything so what Santa doesn't bring we should. My kids do a great job and learn something in the process.

My mom adopts one every year. She gets them whatever is on their wishlist (usually a toy), new socks, maybe an outfit/sweats, etc. I go through my stockpile and donate food and H&B stuff. I do make sure they each get new toothbrushes (even if I have to buy some), deodorant for the adults, toothpaste, etc.

Your local Salvation Army can help, Battered womens shelters in your area. These are the two that I always contact around Christmas to see what I can do. www.salvationarmyusa.org/usn/www_usn.nsf
target also has families on their giving tree online...https://sites.target.com/site/en/cor...d=PRD03-003704

we take food and such to the needy families I know from my work all yr long, not just at holidays. They need help all the time, not just for holidays. we grow a HUGE garden each yr just to be able to share with them and they love it. some of them wouldnt have much else to eat at times if we didnt do this. I cant sit down and eat supper each nite knowing that someone we know is not eating or has very little to eat.

Our local food bank hosts "Operation Santa" where families that are adopted can come and pick up their items and food. Those families not adopted can then go "shopping" through all of the donated items.

At my job we do kids that are taken away from their families or different sizes of families. Through work they don't let us meet the family and we never know who it goes to, but at least we collect items for children.

Now independently I go to the Shelter and speak with the staff and find out who has been the family that's been there the longest w/ kids and that's the family I choose. One year I did every kid that was there, but to see those kids kiss you and hugs you it was great.

We don't adopt one family but this is what we are doing:
Getting gifts for two children through our Church's "angel tree"
Putting together a holiday meal basket for a family through DYFS (we may do two of these)
Donating gently used toys to a church that cleans them up and lets families come in and "shop" for their kids
Donating toys to dds school for their toy drive
So added together, it's like adopting a family but it's spread out over several families

Our church does this for Thanksgiving and Christmas.
It is nice to have a small Sunday School class take a family so that all of it is not on one person.
I choose to adopt an angel from the other tree at church that benefits the disabled home that we sponsor.
Also, I have 5 snowflakes from my husbands work tree that provides toys to a local elementary.

thanks for sharing! I was thinking that I couldn't be the only one!

We adopt our family thru The House of Neighborly Services which is a local place that you can take food/clothes, etc for needy families. Thru them, needy families can ask to be adopted for food, gifts or both. They have to pass an income verification thing. Then families like us can apply to adopt a family

I don't adopt a family, but I organize a food and toy drive at our church and deliver all the food and toys to the families.

This was the first year we didn't pick names off the tree. By the time I went to get some and actually had the money to buy something, there were no names left. We are just bringing some things to the school, the pta is helping out with gifts for a local charity and the food bank.

This is one of the BEST and rewarding things we do every Christmas!!! Makes what we get each other just that much more special and appreciated. I KNOW in my heart and soul that WE get so much more out of this personally than the family we adopt each year!

Teachers & Staff at my school get together a list of needy kids. We buy toys and clothing for them anonymously and the families pick them up through the guidance counselor. Lots of fun to see that kid at school after the holidays in the new clothes you bought for them.

We have done this in the past, through a local agency. This year, by the time I requested a family, they had all been given out. I tried a few other places, but I guess we were too late. Next year I'll start earlier to get a family. You would think they would make it easier to help people.
