My dd's first grade teacher retired after the first semester a couple of years ago. I went and made pictures of all the kids and took them card stock paper(scrapbook size)and had them draw a picture. I left 1 corner blank, ask the kids to not draw in that space. I put the picture in that corner. I also found some really cute scrapbook stickers that were keys. I put one on each page. The first page of the scrapbook was a letter and at the end I wrote something like "thanks for being a key to our success". And then the key on each page, along with each child's drawing and photo. I thought she would have something to remember her "last' class by. She loved it! And each child felt like they had contributed a gift for her retirement, which of course they had.
And a gift card is always nice.
