Unhappy Gotta have oral surgery tomorrow.

and man I sure aint lookin forward to it. I was eating choclate covered almonds and broke my back tooth. I thought it was just cracked and went to the dentist and he said I broke the back all the way off into the gum. I know it sure hurts . anyways, he send me to a oral surgeon and he says I have to have it cut out tomrrow. the xrays shows that the roots on it are shaped like fish hooks. man am i ever dreading this! I have got alot of pain meds to take before I go so I guess I will be knocked out by the time I actually get in there but that dont make me dread it any less. the dentist said he would do everything he could to not bruise my face to bad. what have I gotten my self into????

Oh you poor thing. Just remember to take the pain meds and use lots of ice packs to keep the swelling down. I hope you've got a good support system to give you lots of sympathy for the next few days.

I understand what you are feeling. I had to have a broken tooth surgically removed when I was pregnant so I couldn't get knocked out at the time. I was scared to death. Anyways, he had half the tooth removed without me even knowing it. Try not to worry because it may not be nearly as bad as what you are expecting. My poor 16 yr old DS has to have 4 impacted wisdoms taken out today. I am a nervous wreck!! He's never been under anestesia before and plus I've got the whole guilt factor of doing this to him before Christmas added into it. There was no way around it though. He's getting headaches from them, just got his braces off so they could mess his teeth up, and this is the soonest he would have time off from school to recover. Anyone else had this done...or a child that has had this done recently....what do I have to expect as far as recovery and pain??

My son was under anisthesia for dental work a few years ago. He came out like a champ (and he was only 8 years old!).

I got my wisdom teeth removed about 7 years ago. It was not bad at all, and in all honesty, I was ready to go back to work the next day.

I do recommend buying some childrens medicine syringes though. Fill them with water all the way, and use them to flush out the area the teeth used to be. Those worked better than anything for me. Food gets stuck in the spaces until they grow together, and it can get nasty!!

My biggest problem is that I do not do well under anisthesia(sp). I get nauseous. And it is not fun to vomit after having dental surgery. Not fun at all. And my pain was not bad at all. I think I just took ibuprofen, because the heavy pain medication did not agree with my tummy either.

Good luck to your son! And I am sure you will be a trooper too! It is never easy letting someone else take you child away into surgery.

Thank you for taking the time to post your experience with this. One of my biggest concerns was he's never been put under before and you just never know how they are going to react. So it scared me. Needless to say, he did really well. He was pretty much out of it till around 4:20pm and then he just woke up wanting to eat. That's my big boy!! (He's 6'2" and 200lbs). Then he wanted to have his friend come over and play video games.....you would've never guessed he had surgery! It's crazy. We'll see what he's like today. Hopefully he's not hurting too much. His BIGGEST complaint was not being able to eat FOOD. Oh...here he comes down the stairs....once again....no pain.....just wants real food. So I guess I'm off to make my BIG BOY some scrambled eggs.

Glad you made it through! Maybe you'll be feeling a bit better by Christmas Day. Did they tell you to put ice on it at all?

Yeah, I think drinking through a straw causes a "dry socket" or something. The suction keeps it from healing.
