Maybe we should all join this group? LOL

I read about this group and thought that maybe I should join after all of this clearance shopping I've been doing! I told DH and my Mom...their reply "You think you would be able not to shop for a whole year? Yeah, right! Maybe when it snows in Miami!" LOL ~Lisa

I think that it is great but I can't do it. I can't pass up a bargain but I have learned to only buy a bargain that I would use anyhow or can give to someone to use. A bargain is not a bargain if you can't use it!!

Sounds like an awful lot of work to me. It keeps them busy just like looking for deals keeps me busy.

Absolutely not a life style for me.

Don't think this is the group for me either. With all the after holiday sales, think I can get my sheets, towels, ect just as cheep NEW as they will find USED!!!

I think I do better clipping coupons, watching for sales and matching these up on most stuff. lots of stuff will even get FREE this way!!! As for clothes, I can remember when Hamricks and others goes down to 75% off (sometimes more). That is less than thrift store prices.

To each his own and maybe some would enjoy this!!!

These guys are nuts and I am glad that I am not related to them at gift giving times!!!

"Kalle Lasn, editor of Adbusters magazine, who advocates taking a 24-hour timeout of the consumer merry-go-round, has promoted Buy Nothing Day since 1992, urging citizens to resist the urge to splurge on the day after Thanksgiving, the kickoff to the holiday shopping spree."

Now I do think that I could participate IF they would change the day to lets say March 18th.

It seems that 'recycling' is the root of this organization... vs. spending less? Ya know what I mean?

I love yard sales, thrift stores, and hand-me-downs but there are some things that I will not use as used (ie furniture!).

That's fascinating to me. Considering all I just bought at Target (none of which I actually NEED), it's an interesting concept. We do recycle like crazy at our house, but I don't worry about even finding the bad bulb in our Christmas lights because we always have more packages. I should think more about the environment in that way.... Something for me to consider anyway.

Thanks for sharing!

Although we don't buy a lot of used clothing and furniture, we do try to cut back on "stuff" coming into our house new. For Christmas, one set of grandparents gave us a zoo membership instead of toys for the kids. This is great in my opinion...all of us will go to the zoos around the west coast and it doesn't get forgotten under a bed somewhere.

Yeah, I've seen bras, bathing suits, and nightgowns in some thrift stores. To each their own, but personally, I would never want to wear any of that stuff. ~Lisa

Oops, I should clarify... I love antique or other used wooden furniture! I'm talking about used sofas and armchairs that are upholstered and padded and a dust mite trap. Heh.

No, used underwear or exercise clothing... no thank you.

There is a man who buys the 80's looking spandex exercise clothes at our thrift store. I wonder what he does with that, hmmm... Every time I see him, I get really grossed out.

I actually joined this group after reading this. I haven't bought anything new but made the exception with mystery shopping since that is a means of money for my family. It has actually saved me a ton of money.. I stay out of th estores not buying clearance items right now. My house is becoming decluttered more and more everyday. I do buy some new.. (underwear being one, but do it while doing mystery shops.) it has worked out well. mykids clothes have come from thrift stores. Their shoes are bought new.. I won't jeapordize anything that has to do with their health or schooling.
Their are some really great frugal ideas that are good for the earth too..

It did snow in 1992 (Hurricane Andrew) but I don't think it got as far south as Miami. We lived in Delray Beach at the time (Palm Beach County, about 45 minutes -1 hour north of Miami) and we had some snow flurries that year. Although we missed it, our neighbors told us about it along with our pipes freezing and busting while we were back home in Indiana for the holidays. That was the first time a friend of mine had ever seen snow. She had lived in Delray Beach her whole life.
