Removing rust in hair

Sounds like a bit of a silly question, but I'm looking for some suggestions on how to remove the rust colored buildup from my hair. We have a water softner and all, but over time it still builds up and I'd like to get rid of it without going to pay top dollar at some salon. I've heard lemon juice works, but not sure the mixture and I'm afraid I'll come out bleached blonde or something. My hair is a light brown with some natural blond highlights in it. Anyone have some good tips or advice? Thanks!

I found this for you "After shampooing, rinse your hair with a mixture of 1/2 vinegar, 1/2 warm water" but then I also came across this article that basically says you can't do anything to help it. http://www.newton.dep.anl.gov/askasc...1/gen01666.htm

I guess I would maybe try the vinegar thing, I don't think it would hurt (although the smell may be less than desirable!)

What about a Clarifying shampoo then condition your hair real good. I know my hairdresser told me to clarify once a week to keep my hair from getting dull and brassy

Aveda makes a great clarifying shampoo. I have also heard that Prell or Pert (if you can still find them) will strip almost anything out of your hair.

a long time ago we had water that was full of iron and it turned the back of my head green-took coming home and visiting my best friend and her telling me to find out about it. I went to my hairdresser and she recommended a Nexxus product, but can't recall what it was called.

I used to know a girl who used her regualar hair shampoo 6 days a week and once a week she would use Prell to strip off all the buildup. She swore by it. I've heard Prell is very abrasive, so it would probably be worth a try.

i used to have the same problem and i went to sally beauty supply and got a treatment to use on my hair to remove the rust buildup. it is in a packer that you mix in water and leave it on for awhile. if you have a sally beauty supply near by try there.
