glad you caught it! Can scholastic tell you the shipping address so you know who did it? That's where I would start. As far as where they got it...did you maybe throw away a statement? Sad to think but I have a friend whose brothers stole her CC number out of her file cabinet when he was babysitting the kids

As a former credit card employee, I want to assure you that this is quite common. There have been some major data breaches with lots of numbers stolen from processors. My Visa was misused last year by a pizza shop and a Mexican restaurant in Simi Valley, CA even though I had my cards and live in Raleigh, NC. The boy at the pizza shop nearly soiled his shorts when I called him the day the charges popped online and asked him did he deliver to Raleigh. He gave me a cock & bull story about a girl w/o a card charging pizzas. I told him his boss won't be happy when he eats the chargebacks. The fraudsters had my previous address so it must have been from a merchant. Bank charged the items back and gave me a new number. Don't worry. You did your part. |

What is the world coming to ? There are more and more people turning to criminal activities ? Nothing is safe anymore. Not long ago someone ( they think it was an employee ) from a Supermarket here in CA got a hold of peoples debit card information and cleaned out their checking accounts. |

Well, yours may not have been, but DD's was! She called me this morning and said she had a charge she didn't recognize from "getmedsquick.com" for about $25.00. I told her to give the bank a call when she got home from class. I looked at her account this afternoon and she had another charge for 181.00 from a company in PANAMA that overdrew her! So far all charges are pending but the bank has cancelled her card. They can't actually do anything until the charges "hit" for real and then they will reimburse her and any overdraft charges. Unfortunately this leaves her overdrawn with no debit card, but she gets paid tomorrow and can cash her check. Goes to show you that you need to keep an eye on your accounts! Thank goodnes for online banking!

I'm sorry to hear about your DD. We have a debit card too. it makes me want to get rid of it.. to think these people can easily clean out your bank account it shocking & scarey! It's a shame she has to go thru all this mess. Thank goodeness she gets paid tommorrow..This has defintely rattled my nerves so much ..I will always check my cc & debit card daily from now on.Dh thinking I'm going alittle overboard wanting to cancel our debit card now...I know we would only be limited to the first $50 on cc if it was indeed stolen... but the limit we have they could of went down and purchase a brand new car with it

We had our credit card number stolen last year around this time. From talking with the credit card company, they did not feel it was stolen from the internet. The investigator I spoke with said it probably happened at a gas station. What did the idiots try to buy with my card? Adult toys! Almost $900 worth. Man, that's alot of toys! |

Watch what happens online too. Last week my dh got an e-mail that looked like it was from Bank of America. First of all out computer caught it under a fraud page. It said our account was now on line and that we should enter our account info. We have been banking online for a number of years. Bank of america also has something called sitekey which was not on this page. We reported it to Bank of America. Also the address at the top had the person name. So be carefull.

angel38- No thief "tests" the waters- they grab and run! My mil had her card stolen- literally stolen out of her purse while she was talking to a "nice" lady who needed help. By the time she got home 20 minutes later, the cc company was on the phone asking her about charges. The thieves had charged over $1000 worth of electronic stuff and they were trying to buy a computer. Of course, everything was reversed. Last year, my husband and I went to Italy. Before we left, I bought train tickets for Venice to Florence etc. That action triggers my cc fraud dept and they immediately suspended my card until I called them and said"what happened? the Chinese restaurant refused my card?". They told me that they were suspicious of the Italian charges. I thanked them.

I think I saw something about a Discover cc that you can use that is like a facade number of sorts. The number you use on this card is not the actual cc number so if you use it online, it cannot be stolen. I have often thought about getting this card, but am totally unfamiliar with Discover cards. Does anyone have one of these or know more about it?

I know Paypal has this, it issues you a virtual credit card number that you can use for shopping online. However you should know that most cc numbers are stolen in person rather than online. In this case, DD's number was stolen at a local store in Miami. Our CC number was stolen when I was shopping in Sawgrass Mills mall in Ft Lauderdale. I'm sure if you talk to a lot of folks that had their numbers stolen they will most likely tell you that they were not stolen online. I feel more comfortable using my cc number online anymore than I do in a store! |
