"Mom, did they have to....."

"cut your stomache open for you to have a baby?"

My 7 year old just asked me this. I asked him what brought this up and said he was just wondering. I was able to dodge the bullet by saying some poeple have to but I didn't. Then I told him girls have a special place, that boys don't have, for babies to come out. Now I am afraid the big questions will start to come.

I have to teach mitosis and meiosis to my fifth graders- trying to teach meiosis and reproduction sucks lol. I end up breezing over the chapter, telling them that meiosis is "two morphing into one" and if they have anymore questions, go home and ask. I dread that day all year!

I can honestly say yes to that question for both of my DD's. Altough I told them not everyone has to be cut open to have a baby.

Both my kids (5 year old DD and 7 year old DS) know where a baby comes from, know I was cut open and well....basically everything I guess. I answer each question as honestly as possible for their level. It's hard to do because some questions have many answers. I pick a basic and truthful answer and hope the questions stop. My grandpa is sick and dying so the questions about death are coming all the time now...over and over.

My youngest DS (he's 3 1/2) asked the other day how he got into my tummy before he was born. I told him 'daddy put you there'. Then he wanted to know if there was a hole to get in and if it closed up once he was inside and then opened again when it was time to come out. Then he wanted to know how he got food while he was in there <lol>.

A close family friend just had a baby and I think that is what started him thinking about this. I tried to be as 'factual' as possible in 3 year old terms. My 7 year old hasn't started asking questions (yet), but when he does, I'll also try to be as possible in 7 year old terms.
