Could Use Some Prayers

About a month ago my mom all of a sudden got this pain in her leg, and hip. It was very painful, and caused her to limp quite a bit. Nothing happened, no falls, bumps or bruises stick out. 3 yrs ago my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. A lumpectomy, 6 mos chemo/6 mos radiation, she was free and clear. She went for her regular 3 mos check up with her cancer specialist about 1.5 weeks ago. He took an X-ray of the area. Called her on Christmas eve, and told her there is something there that should not be, and she needed to have an MRI immediately after Christmas. Now my mom has had a lot of problems..chronic arthritis, barretts espohgus (sp) that they thought was cancer, I mean everything under the sun. She's on about 15 different medications on a daily basis. So usually she takes each test, and appt with a 'whatever' attitude and shows up at the next appt. This call didn't sit well with her though, which startled me. She called the specialist back, and asked him to be straight with what he saw. He said there is a large portion of bone missing in her femur bone, that he is highly suspicous of cancer, and that she would "Off the record" more than likely have to have surgery with some form of metal replacement. Keep in mind this dr has never breathed the word cancer, except when he found her breast lump. In my opinion, he's a great dr.

She was referred to a bone specialist. We went, and he thought the pain in her hip, and the pain in her leg were two different things. So he gave her a cortisone shot in the office. Came back 20 mins and asked her to walk and see how the pain was. Her 1st step she practically fell down and into the dr. It's to the point now where she is stumbling because she can barely raise her leg enough to take a step. Drs face went completely serious. He consulted with another dr. Ordered an MRI, and a full bone scan (one 6 months ago was free and clear). MRI results are in as of yesterday, and they have since called her 3 different times to make schedule, and then make sure she would be coming to the appt next Friday for the results of the MRI and the bone scan she will have on Tuesday. (She scheduled the appt with the 1st call, and the other 2 times they said they wanted to be sure she would be coming..)??

Bone specialist did not want to confirm it was an actual hole in her leg, with bone missing but said there definitely is something there. That whatever it is, is center based and approximately 4 inches big. Due to the fact it is center based he does not feel there is a risk of fracture however (that was a concern of mine-should she even be walking).

In all the tests, and procedures she's had, I've never been as nervous as I am right now. She's fairly young, only 56. I think I am so scared because whether it's cancer or not, it's something really serious. If it is cancer, I'm suspicious of a form of bone cancer-which is a sickening thought.

I could really use your thoughts and prayers on this one..if you could. My mom's name is Donna. Thanks for reading.

UPDATE* My mom came down with the flu and was up vomiting all night long so she couldn't make the bone scan appt today. I told her she was lucky she didn't call me until it was too late because I would have still made her go. She now has to reschedule that, and I'm assuming the results appt. On a side note for me, today I was told I need to have surgery to remove a colloid nodule on my thryoid. It's benign, and not particulary bothersome but rather large (3.8 cm), so we are taking a proactive approach in getting rid of it. Surgery is scheduled for 2/8.

Smile the C word

Ya the C word is so scary i just said a prayer for your Mom, God Bless her, I do so believe in the power of prayers, My husband has lung cancer and was given four months to live in June of 2005 as it was in the fourth stage when they found it, and has attacked his bones also. He now has made it a year and a half. The Dr's are amazed. God sure has answered many prayers for us . My husband has been truly blessed. They told him with chemo and radation he had a chance of more time but they could not cure him. They found some in his liver now and that scares me but i pray that this new Chemo has caught it in time. He has another C.A.T scan to see how things look on Jan. 15th. I am on pins and needles every time he has one. God Bless your Mom and you, she is lucky to have such a great daughter to be by her side . jbyrd in Michigan
