What is the coolest job that you have ever had?

Me? I worked for one summer in one of the National Park Lodges on the rim of the Grand Canyon. I was a dishwasher in the restaurant. The job might not have been so cool (actually quite disgusting! and VERY hard work) but the perks were out of this world. I went hiking/backpacking every weekend with people with similar interests and was able to stay in the dorms at the bottom of the canyon (Phantom Ranch) for nothing! That was 20 years ago but I have very fond memories of that summer!

I thought of it because of the haircut threads. Side job; I was the Grand Canyon barber that summer.

AND, I met (yea right, from 50 feet away) someone famous that summer... Eddy from the Munsters, Butch Patrick, came through one day and so we all spied through the kitchen window while he ate his lunch. Heh.

I trained horses at 4 different show barns. Got to travel all over the United States all expenses paid. Then during down months I got to stay home and watch all the babies be born from breeding season. They were sooooo cute. Hard work and man was I in great shape.

I think the best job I had was being a residential counselor at a school for emotionally disturbed kids. It was my first job out of high school. we got paid to take the kids to parks, the movies, pools, etc. My work week was wed thru sunday. I got saturdays off . the pay was great..I got free meals. I really loved it.

I haven't had many jobs... coolest I guess was working for a certain company that made yearbooks, for the most part I cut negatives and pinned them to the photo and sorted them into the proper folders, different envelopes for each page... was neat to see all the different parts of making yearbooks.

Like the above poster I have only had 5 jobs (3 were temps) but I really liked working at Macy's. I was in the mens Tommy section and had no dressing room to clean. Our area was small and easy to keep clean. The register was beside a large pole so often no one would even see me standing there. I really did not want to quit.
The other was a 2 day job at the Dole Pineapple Plant in Hawaii. They were closing so I sat behind a switchboard and read magazines. The phone only rang 3 times. It was boring but EASY $$$.

Well, I worked at an advertising agency for almost 2 years before my DD was born and was the sect'y for the artistic director. The people at this agency (as I think is true of many agencies) were young and creative and very laid back. I met a lot of people who came in to work on the ads for the agency, such as some pro basketball players (Karl Malone and a couple others I can't remember names of as I am a California fan), Billie Jean King (super, super nice and down-to-earth lady), Samuel L Jackson, and others. That was a really fun job. Besides being a mom, though, I think my most rewarding job is the one I am doing now. I work as an Instructional Assistant with multi-handicapped kids in middle school. Both physically and emotionally handicapped. Challenging as the job is, it is also so giving to me. I don't make hardly any money in the scheme of things, but I get more back than a paycheck.

Mine would be my truck driving years. Not that theres anything "kool" about driving a truck, other than very good pay. But I got to seee LOTS of this country and Canada that I never would have seen otherwise. And during layovers I met a lot of nice people who worked for the same company I was with. We were sometimes laid over for several days and had time between runs to meet, visit other drivers and site see.

I have one lady friend I met during that time in a truck stop in Atlanta Ga. I was from Indiana and she was from Toledo, Oh. We both ended up taking runs from there to Releigh, N.C. When we delivered it was early on a Sat. morning so we were there the whole weekend. We went garage saling together and had our meals together. We have been good friends every since that time in 1995. We're both retired now but still go back and forth. I'm just praying for her now, as she is battling her second battle with cancer. She beat it the first time around of brain cancer and I'm praying she can beat this cancer in her kidneys. They say she is cancer free in all the rest of her body at this time.

If you're so inclined, all prayers are appreciated. Her name is Carole.

I've never had a cool job. I've only had two jobs and they have both been retail which I really hate sometimes because of all the inconsiderate people who leave such a mess as they shop.

The job I currently have and have had for 6 years would be my coolest. I am a pit boss over black jack and it's never boring. You see the documentarys on T.V. about how people cheat and scam and we learned how to look for all of that. Plus, it's still amazing to me to see the thousands of dollars people will drop and how much they will play on just one hand. Where do they get this money?!!

I guess my coolest job was a domestic Air Force flight nurse for two years. I was able to fly all over the country, use the most high tech machinery, take hops in heliocopters to hospital rooftops, scream down highways in ambulances, eat food from all over the country, see a small part of Cuba and Labador, and generally work my butt off for two years. I also flew with the Operation Homecoming and helped bring home the Vietnam POWs.

I loved working as a medical assistant in a pediatrics office. The dr's were the greatest and treated us really well. One of the docs, me and a billing girl were all pg at the same time. They threw us a joint baby shower after work at a really nice restaurant (spouses or boyfriends included). The doc got a double stroller, the billing girl got a new travel system stroller, and I got our crib set. And yes I did like giving shots too. Hee hee.

I worked one summer as a charter tour assistant in Italy. We handled the passengers airport arrivals, transfers to hotels and hotel bookings, booking of side tours etc. Was very stressful but incredible experience. At the end of the summer, one of the other girls and I went to Athens and the Greek Islands for two weeks before coming home. I had never been on an airplane before this, didn't speak any Italian. I got the job after the girl who had the job got fired for blowing off work to spend time with her new Italian boyfriend (s). A relative of mine had worked for the company before and got me the job.

The coolest job I ever had was when I was a teenager -- I was a summer missionary for Child Evangelism Fellowship. We would set up for a week in a neighborhood (sort of like a neighborhood Vacation Bible School) and all the neighborhood kids would come. We'd have snacks, kool-aid , games and funny/cute songs and tell them stories with flannelgraph and picture books from the Bible. The kids would come running when they saw our car!! That was over 30 years ago. Sometimes I pass by the places where we would set up and wonder whatever happened to the kids......

I had two pretty cool jobs... the first was being counciler for ymca before/after school program and all day summer. Great fun taking the kids to all the parks, zoo and sight seeing trips.
The other was being office manager for a construction company. I just loved going to the bid meetings being the only female and winning the job. LOL yes it was an ego thing HAHA

You’re going to think I’m crazy but the best job I’ve had so far was a manager at a fast food restaurant. I worked with the same 3 people. We were in between 2 schools, so we were really busy at lunch. We would do almost as much in sales in an hour and a half , as they did the rest of the day and they always had twice as many people. It was crazy but fun, and my 10 hour days flew by.

But the best part was the little kids that came. It wasn’t in the best neighborhood, most were from single parent families, whose parent left for work long before the kids woke up and didn‘t get home until late. The kids were in elementary school. It started out with a couple kids and we ended up with about a dozen after their friends found out. They’d stop by on their way to school and on their way home. They’d show us their home work (which we helped them with when they needed it) tests, and report cards. We gave them free pop or food if they improved their grades, some if they just didn‘t get in trouble at school that day. Bought one girl a coat, her and her sister had to take turns because they only had one. I took another kid across the street to the gas station and let him pick out a few bags of candy so he’d have a treat to take to school on his birthday (he didn‘t stop thanking me for weeks). They closed that restaurant and we were transferred to one in another town. The last day we were open the kids came in and we were all crying. I still wonder what happened to them. Their attitudes and outlook changed so much I hope that they continued to improve their grades, stay out of trouble, and made something of them selves.

Has anyone noticed that all of our coolest jobs were the ones that didn't involve making big MONEY! Most of our coolest jobs were either volunteer or very low pay!!

Guess that goes to show money doesn't buy everything!

For me, my coolest job is what I do now- technical writer. I also write for Maelan Magazine.

But I worked as Mascots- Buddy Bear for Bland's Park- the bull for Texas Hot dogs, Ninja Turtle for Picway Shoes, plus others.

I also did tons of mystery shopping, merchandising, was a project manager and senior editor for a mystery shopping company.

And I think my phone job is cool just because I can work whenever i want and had a MEGA shopping trip yesterday from that pay- but it isnt so cool like now when i'm trying to work and my six year old is running around screaming with two dogs charging after her. BLAH

I never had a cool job, just jobs.
I haven't worked since I got married in 1969 , so I'd have to say the coolest job I've ever had is being a Grammy.

One of my better jobs was right out of college and was an assistant buyer for a TOYS for a large NY Dept store. I was able to go to Toy Fair.. There were Large rooms of Barbie, Stieff and all things toys. It was amazing seeing grown men promote and play with toys for kids.
Later I started working for fragrances and had the honor of meeting Elizabeth Taylor. that is still a WOW.

Anna21 You bring back such memories. We used to go to the catskills every summer. Either the Nevele or the Concord Hotels. Do you know that Nevele is eleven spelled backwards. It was named after 11 brothers and sisters. When I was little I would put the radio under my pillow to listen to Cousin Brucie in WABC AM at bed time.

I now live in Bucks County, PA but will always be a New Yorker.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

I worked as performer at Opryland for 3 years during the summer months when I was in High School. I don't exactly know how "cool" it is but it was a lot of fun.

I was a college intern for A&W Restaurants corporate marketing department. It was a lot of fun and I worked with some great people. Unfortnately, they didn't have any openings to hire me after my internship was finished.

Wow, great post!

My favorite job is the one I have now. I am a Reenactment SchoolMarm for a One Room Schoolhouse. A county near my home has a refurbished one room school house from the 1880s. It is beautiful, I get choked up each time I go into it.

In the 3rd or 4th grade most of the school kids in the area...from all around the county and neighboring counties..come to us on a day field trip. The are the kids, even has names they take on for the day and I am the teacher. I teach history of the time, geography of the time, reading from the McGuffy Readers and even more. We eat lunch together, they bring food from a list we provide the schools so everything is as close to authentic as possible.

Alot of kids tell me it is the best field trip they have ever had. One kid told me "Wow, Miss Rebecca, I did not even know I liked History"

It's a toss up...
I loved working as a 911 dispatcher. But, working the night shift (with two small children) just about ended my marriage! Lots of cool, unique, scarey, funny things happen on a daily basis in our town!

Before I had kids I worked as a Psychiatric Aide in a Lock-down facility for Juvenile Sexual Offenders. Not cool in the truest sense of the word, but I learned a lot and it was a very rewarding job. Of course, some of our clients were truly psychopaths that scared the bejesus out of me and caused me to have nightmares...
