Do you freecycle?

Have you gotten anything good from there lately? I just got rid of a bunch of stuff.. It is so nice not having to haul it off! What goodies have you gotten from there?

The only thing I have picked up from freecycle is a Pizza Pizzazz. My mom wanted one, and I was thrilled when I saw one on freecycle for her. I picked it up, and the thing had a huge crack down the middle of it. Crack down the middle of an electronic item = fire hazard! I ended up pitching it. It simply was not safe to use. I was pretty bummed out.

I get rid of more stuff using freecycle. I just got rid of a garbage bag and a box full of misc. stuff. People love boxes o' stuff where I live. I have noticed that you have to set strict time limits though, otherwise people will want your stuff but not pick it up.

Last time I got rid of the stuff I said that it had to be picked up by noon on Sunday. Worked perfect! That way, if the person didn't pick it up by noon I had the rest of the day to find someone else to pick it up.

I do get irritated with people asking for expensive stuff, giving a sob story. But I just hit the delete button and it vanishes!

I used to be on our local freecycle but it's really a joke and I got tired of it. There are about 100+ emails a day. That's not the issue. Issues are:

I put a few things up. Got folks that wanted the stuff. Stayed at home 3 days for the people to pick it up (they gave me dates and times). No shows for all 3 I couldn't "leave it outside" because I feared it would disappear (and told them this)

I emailed about something I wanted. Gal said great and told me where she lived and when I could pick it up. She lived 20 miles away. I went 4 times and she was never home and nothing was left I gave up

People ALWAYS asking for NEW appliances (washers, refridgerater), cars, furniture...basically they only want brand new. To me, freecycle isn't the place to only ask for brand new stuff but maybe that's just me.

It just got really irritating and now I email a group of moms and have had better luck

I use freecycle mostly to give things away, but have gotten a couple of things also. My favorite story is about an oscar (big, ugly, mean fish) that I gave a way. The woman that picked it up was talking to it (real nice...not like me... saying *I wish you'd die* every time I walked by.) She was actually petting the darn thing in the bucket and telling it all about the ride home and how happy she was to have him. Believe me, the fish found a much nicer home!

I have had very good luck with my freecycle. I have gotten an antique round table(use it in my kitchen), two ladder back chairs(I painted them and recaned the seats), two wingback chairs(gave them to my friend), a ton of small vintage and antique items that I collect(I made friends with a woman who is cleaning out her house through freecycle), and a vintage 50's mickey play kitchen set.

I don't post a lot to get rid of on it, but I do reply to quite a few Want posts, especially for baby items(because I have a ton of them). For the most part, people show up on time for me, but I do know that "no shows" are becoming more of a problem.

The admins of my local freecycle try to keep the outragious wants off the board, but every now and then I do see people asking for Coach purses, cars, computers, and one that a ton of people want is washers and dryers.

I don't/haven't yet received from Freecycle, but have given a lot. I have always donated, usually to goodwill-type places. But, I feel so much better giving to individuals (even though I KNOW there are trollers on Freecycle who are resalers. However, those are less than those who want/need things so if occasionally a resaler gets some of the stuff I no longer need, oh well. I quite often do Freecycle, probably at least 2 times a month. I would say that probably about 30% of the time, unfortunately, there are no shows...which is always irritating! Most just don't show up or even call to cancel or reschedule. But I ALWAYS have a back-up and if the no-show comes later to try and collect, too bad.

I must have missed this... how do you find out about your local FreeCycle so that I can look into it? Is there information online? Is it www.freecycle.org ?

Thanks for the info on this. I appreciate the posts on what to look out for as well. I usually just drop my stuff at the thrift store and take the tax writeoff but maybe worth a look-see.

After a week my husband made me take myself off the list. We were getting easily 100+ emails a day from it. I was pretty annoyed too.

You don't have to get the emails, just uncheck that feature. I just look at the board and see what is posted. Now, if you offer something, you will get emails still, but I use my yahoo account for that, not my main email address.

I started freecycling last summer & have given soooo much away which has really helped me to downsize since I live in a small 1bdrm & my dad moved back up here & since his accident shortly after his moving back here had to move in with me we really need the room for him. I have given him the bedroom since I suffer from Insomnia & maybe sleep on an average 3-4 hours a night {on a GOOD night}
I have never gotten anything from other freecyclers mainly because of not much that we really want nor the room for it but it sure is nice to beable to help others out by giving them things that I can no longer use or have the room for

I tried that, for some reason they wouldn't turn them off so I ended up giving up. Maybe I'll try again sometime.
