How much cash do you keep on you?

I was at the gas station today and I noticed the lady next to me with a huge WAD of cash and I got thinking, I only have a couple of bucks and change on me most of the time (DH too)!? I use the debit card for almost everything now and if i have cash it just seems to melt out of my wallet.

How much do you keep on you, not when you are headed to the store or something, just in general.

PS While I was waiting for the truck to fill up, I was cleaning out the center console and found a bank envelope with a $20 in it. So I'm not as broke as I thought I was. It's a good day!

I usually don't carry much...we use our debit cards for almost everything as well. We don't even order checks.

I use checks and cards when I go out which isn't often I have a $5 in my wallet, been in there a couple months at least. I've also recently cleaned out my wallet and am no longer carrying around cards to stores we don't have where we moved to, or my SSN card or voter's card, just the basics!

I normally don't carry any cash. I use my debit card all the time. I guess that's why the black strip on the back is almost gone in one spot. Time to replace it. LOL!!!

I always carry a good $50 in my purse. I don't like writing checks for little amounts here and there.

I rarely ever have cash. Always have 2 debit cards to use as needed. No credit cards either. My debit cards are wonderful. Love them!

I always have less than 10 dollars on me and I don't even own a debit card, neither does dh! We write checks, and since that's a hassle it keeps up from spending unwisely! Can we all tell I have a spending problem?!

It is an odd day that I even have a dollar with me. I use my bank card since Wachovia gives you points for every dollar you spend when using it as a credit.

Less than 20.00 here...
Debit card is all I use and I usually have less than 3 ATM/Cash after purchase type transactions a month.

I like the bank to do all the bookkeeping!---
DH and I know exactly where it all goes!

Usually about $20-$25. I use the CheckCard for everything, but keep a few bucks in case the kids or DH needs it.

I rarely have over $5 or $10 on me. I can not imagine life without a debit card anymore. That is how I pay for almost everything.

under $20 and mainly under $10. I don't use debit...put everything on credit to get free GC's and pay it off end of the month. DH's famous line is "I only have a dollar". My FIL on the other hand hates cards and used to carry (don't know if he still does) around $2K with him.....eeeekkkk

I use my debit card to buy gas and groceries. I write checks for everything else (Walmart, Target, pet store, etc.) The $20 or less I carry in my wallet is mostly to get buy lunch with or pick up a soda.

Right now, I have $75 in my wallet. That is beyond unusual though. I usually only keep $20 or less on me in cash. DH and I use a credit card for everything we can, but pay it off every month, so we can rack up points and get cash back. The reason I have so much cash right now is because I went on a trip last weekend to visit my grandma and withdrew $50 cash to have on me, and I really didn't end up spending anything. While I was visiting my grandma, we went to a casino and I won some money on the nickel slot machines. I put $3 in and ended up getting $27 out of the machine (would have wound up with $35 if I would have quit sooner). I know it's not a whole lot of money, but it was exciting to me since my spending limit was only $5. My mom ended up going to the casino twice and blew $20 each time. I just can't justify spending $40 and having nothing to show for it - I feel bad enough when I lose $5. When I'm there with my mom, I usually end up following her around just to make sure she's not over at the ATM machine pulling more money out (caught her doing it once after she ran out of money and I had to stop her).

I was happy to find $0.75 in the bottom of my purse the other day, I never have cash on me. Dh only has a 2 dollar bill in his wallet, it was a good luck gift from my Grandmother and he will never spend it(means even more now that she is gone). We use debit cards for almost everything, I barely write checks anymore either.

I usually have between $50 - $200 depending on what part of the pay period we're in. It's much easier to pay for those small items with cash then to go thru the whole debit/credit card thing at times.

Besides, hubby and DD are always coming to me at the last minute saying they need a few bucks here and there for something so I liked to be as prepared as I can when it comes to those two. LOL!

I just checked my wallet. I have .23!! woohoo!!

My dad yells at me all the time for this! He says " You should always have $20 in your wallet so the dog's don't pee on you!" ( Don't ask, I have NO idea! lol)

I NEVER EVER have a dime. I use my check card for everything. Even a .40 candy bar!

My dh always tells me I carry too little...If I have $25 I am rich. Right now I have about $60, I made a few returns after Christmas and still have the $$$. I always pay with a cc, and then fear to open the bill when it comes. But I do get points with the cc.

In our home? none
In my pocket book: none
In my car: lots of change under the floor mat
Our home burned when I was younger and I learned not to keep cash in the house because of this.
With my job, i spend alot of time in some pretty bad parts of town
I keep change under the floor mat of my car so i can get a drink or something if I want it during the day. A few yrs ago, our daughter and a friend was going to shoot pool and wanted some change. I told them to go get what was under my flood mat. They came back with 38.00
no wonder the floor mat was sliding around!

That's funny! Did you hear a 'clink' every time you hit a bump? LOL.

I try to keep $5-20 or more in my wallet... mainly for emergencies like the frozen yogurt shop and stuff like that.

Really? What kind of points? What do you use the points for? I just moved to the area, and started banking at Wachovia about 2 months ago. I use my debit card all the time, but haven't heard anything about "points." Am I missing something good?

My bank (not Wachovia) participates in the Visa Extras program. Seems like they raised how many points it takes for rewards recently Wish they would let my husband and I pool our points together, he uses his card a lot more than I use mine, most of my points come from grocery shopping but been using checks recently.

I really am glad I am not the only one who doesn't have cash!

I thought gee maybe I'm broker than I thought if I can't even put $50 in my wallet? But it is more of a choice I guess, and I choose not to.

I'm a cash payer for daily things.
That debit card makes it sssoooo easy to overspend.
Way to easy.
So each week a specific amount of cash goes into my wallet and untill the next week that cash is the spending limit.
Basically, I guess you could say, I give myself an allowance and when its gone for that week, it's gone.
Yes, the debit card is there in case of emergency, but I make myself think twice before getting it out.

Household set in cement monthly bills, like rent or phone bill etc, do NOT come out of my "weekly cash allowance".
But my gas and anything spent at stores does come out of it.
This helps me stay on a budget.

I use my Mastercard Check Card for all purchases. Love the rewards gift certificates. It paid for a snow blower last year. I never have over 3.00 cash in my wallet. Once at work I had a person turn in a wallet with over 1,500.00 cash. When I called the gentleman all he asked about was his credit cards. I was a little stunned.

I was out shopping this weekend, and the couple in front of me had purchases that totaled up to $279. They had three One hundred dollar bills. I was amazed that people would carry that around!

My wallet ALWAYS has a hundred dollar bill in it. Usually I carry much more. I'm black and experience has taught me that I don't get cut the same slack as people might. Once a friend got sick and I had to call a car service. The driver demanded the $40 fare before he would take her home. I knew it was illegal but I was in no position to argue..

I used to keep less than $20, but at the beginning of last year, I went on a new debt reduction and budget and used cash only for EVERYTHING. So now I have different envelopes of cash for each spending category. I don't carry all my envelopes all the time, but I think I usually have about $500 on me.

If my purse gets stolen, I may be out a lot of cash but they won't have any credit cards to rack up (just my Paypal debit card which has less than $100). And I spend a lot less cash than people who use credit/debit cards. It's just too easy to spend plastic than it is to spend cash.

By the way, using my new budget/debt reduction cash only plan, I was able to pay off the $16,500 balance on my minivan in just 10 months. If you new our income, you would know that was IMPOSSIBLE!

You are wise! Is that $500 a month that you budget for everything? Gas, groceries, eating out??? Are you able to get your DH to do the same? In my home, DH is the primary breadwinner so it is very hard for me to put restrictions on him since he really does make good money (and have great benefits)...

I have been to workshops on debt reduction and this is always what is recommended (budget envelopes with cash).

Good job for paying off that minivan!

I carry very little cash with me.
We use our Kroger CC for groceries and gas so when we have purchased $100 for groceries we can get 15c off each gallon of gas we buy.
We use our Disney CC on EVERYTHING else that we can, even doctor visits so that we will have lots of points for our November trip to DW.
Both cards get paid in full every month.

About $100.00

I don't have as much as I did a month ago.
We had a neighbor who had her purse snatched at the super market.
I took most of the cash out of mine.

I did have over $600.00 in my purse. That was stupid!

I usually keep about $5 - $20 in my purse and that's usually, a $5 and 15 one's. Because of my profession, I am always needing change, so I tend to keep that on hand, however when times are tougher, I may only have five ones' on me...just depends.

Usually $20 or less and all in small bills. I keep it in the pocket of my jeans and it is mostly for tipping.
My sweetie is not allowed to carry more than $5 because anything more than that and he is shopping for somewhere to spend it.

This post started in January 2007, a year ago! I was so surprised to see it pop up to the top again. So funny!

I keep $5-20 cash in my wallet because I don't usually use my credit cards on purchases that cost less than $5!

Anywhere from $200 to $5 I usually take $200 out of the ATM and then spend it down over about three weeks to where I have nothing and go back and get some more. I buy lunch at the cafe at work everyday....and it really adds up, now that I think about it...

Cuthie, I did a double-take too....I'm like how did this post get so much discussion and I didn't even notice it.

PS While I was waiting for the truck to fill up, I was cleaning out the center console and found a bank envelope with a $20 in it. So I'm not as broke as I thought I was. It's a good day!
I bet you spent that $20 too

I used to use my debit card for everything but 4 years ago went to using cash. I was spending too much and it was hard to keep track of my spending that way. Now I have a certain amount budgeted for each week and take out that much cash every Friday. This way, I know how much I am spending and have saved so much!
