Addictions..when good things turn bad.

I started my diet like the rest of everyone else here and have been doing pretty good on it. UNFORTUNATELY-I have one very large addiction now that I'm having a hard time breaking..oh no it's not candy or carbs, or men, or cigarettes...its SAMS CHOICE CLEAR AMERICAN MANDARIN ORANGE SPARKLING WATER BEVERAGE (sold at Walmart)..basically it's carbonated water that tastes like orange soda. I drink about 5 liters of it a day. I'm not sure if it's helping my diet or harming it. I mean it IS water, no calories, no carbs, no sugar..but I think I'm drinking way too much of it. SOMEONE STOP ME! I've even got my kids drinking it too. There is other flavors but this mandarin orange is MMMMMM. Anyone else try it yet?

havent tried that flavor but I did drink strawberry kind for awhile my kids also loved we only drank about 1 bottle aday though between me & maybe 2 of my girls then we went to plain water now they are drinking that I would try if I were you to slowly switch to plain water I dont think this flavored carb water is the best thing for a person I think it has splenda in it & & that fizzy stuff is probably not great either as for splenda I think they are just not sure yet if its harmful or not so its kinda scary. I admit I probably use way too much splenda but trying not to let my kids have it.

You know, for years the scientists all said that Saccharin (I'm sure I misspelled that) caused cancer and was harmful to your health. But I was raised on Saccharin sweetened tea! And have been extremely healthy my whole life!

And then when Nutrasweet came out--it had a better taste than saccharin, and now Splenda tastes better than Nutrasweet. I don't think the "scientists" really and truly know what they are talking about at times!

I think everything in moderation is the key--even with the kids! My youngest DS loves granola bars (would eat them all the time) and they are relatively healthy for him. But, I still monitor and limit how many he is allowed.

I've read that any kind of flavored water should not count as your daily water for weight loss purposes. Not sure exactly why, but have read that quite a few places.

I think "they" say that excessive use of any unnatural sweetener like equal or splenda actually slows your metabolism. I'm in big trouble with this due to excess drinking of Diet Coke!

I heard that they fed it to rats in huge concentrated amounts. Like a person would have to eat 30 pounds a day for 10 years and it may cause cancer type of thing.... I don't remember the exact amounts, but something that a person could not obtain in normal life.

In the late 60's it was cyclamate that they said killed rats. Of course the amount they fed the rats was high. If they had fed rats that much of any liquid they would probably have died!
Rumors were that the sugar industry was against it as it was cheap and they didn't want the competition.
The test is questionable today.

lisacb, i think they said a person would have to drink over 200 bottles of pop to equal what they gave them!

Quote:
In 1966, a study reported that some intestinal bacteria could desulfonate cyclamate to produce cyclohexylamine, a compound suspected to have some chronic toxicity in animals. Further research resulted in a 1969 study which found the common 10:1 cyclamate:saccharin mixture to increase the incidence of bladder cancer in rats. Other studies implicated cyclohexylamine in testicular atrophy in mice. On October 18, 1969, the Food and Drug Administration banned its sale in the United States and the United Kingdom followed suit the next year. Abbott Laboratories claimed that its own studies were unable to reproduce the 1969 study's results, and in 1973, Abbott petitioned the FDA to lift the ban on cyclamate. This petition was eventually denied in 1980 by FDA Commissioner Jere Goyan. Abbott Labs, together with the Calorie Control Council (a political lobby representing the diet foods industry), filed a second petition in 1982. Although the FDA has stated that a review of all available evidence does not implicate cyclamate as a carcinogen in mice or rats cyclamate remains banned from food products in the United States. The petition is now held in abeyance (it is not actively being considered) though whether this is at the request of Abbott Labs themselves or because the petition is considered to be insufficient by the FDA is unclear. Cyclamate is approved as a sweetener in more than 55 countries: for example, the brand-name beverage sweetener Sweet'N Low, which contains only dextrose, saccharin, cream of tartar and calcium silicate in the United States, contains cyclamate in Canada (where saccharin is banned except for diabetic usage). Conversely, Sugar Twin, the brand-name cyclamate sweetener in Canada, contains saccharin in the United States.

I feel for you.

I'm a Carb junkie.

As for Splenda. True it's made from sugar, but they treat the sugar with chlorine ( a carcinogen ) making it a chemical that your body can't absorb.

It's ok to count Diet Coke as 1 of your waters as long as it is caffeine free. When DH and I started WW last year I was freaked I would have to give up my Diet Coke but nope I just counted each one as my water and limited my caffeine to 1 every other day. I lost 30 lbs in 6 months so it worked for me.

This time round I've changed up what I'm doing because for me it's more about portion control and eating right then losing weight.

Ladies I was a nutrasweet junkie and it does cause damage as I am one of those people who have been damaged. It all depends on how your body handles nutrasweet and the others. There are some facts to what the scientists are saying but again it all depends on your body and how it accepts these unnatural sweetners.

By the way does anyone think that Diet Coke is more addictive than Coke? I always hear of the Diet coke junkies and not many Coke junkies. By the way I mean the soda pop coke not the other.

Stevia is a healthy non sugar alterative to artificial sweetners and sugar.
