I was 15 when I started. Its crazy how soon they get it now. My niece was about 9 when she started "budding." My sister freaked out whenshe saw them and took her to the Dr. (she thought they were some kind of lump). Boy was she embaressed when the Dr. said "her body is starting to change, she is becoming a woman."

A my oldest is now 12 & thankfully nothing yet but alot of her friends have had it at least a few years so I know you are not the only one with a child that young getting it.

I guess I will count my blessings since I am still trying to figure out how I will handle it when it does happens which btw I have no idea how I will I do know however thanks to walgreens we are well stocked with pads when it does happen

My cousin started when she was 5! My Aunt and Mom just couldn't quit talking about the problems this would cause on such a young girl - what with accidents and all. My Aunt kept taking her to a different doctor with the same answers-'she is just fine, don't worry' I was about 12 at the time and I remember thinking 'how awful. they just got her out of diapers and now they gotta get her into a Kotex'

PS- my cousin is almost 60 now and swears she hasn't started the change. I think she is fibbing because she is so vain and don't want to get old.

I know the situation isn't funny, but your comment here made me laugh!

I was 11 when I started mine - 2nd girl in my class. I cried like a baby. I was lucky though, I was already at home. I was so scared of growing up! Heh

My sisters - who are both 13 years younger than me - one started at age 15 and one started at age 16. The one who was 15 was excited she got it and the one that got it 16 was so mad that she didn't get it first! LOL!

Man, what a huge difference a few years makes.

Auntie Flo

I had my first period on July 3rd, right before my 13th birthday. If you are wondering how I still remember the exact date it is because my mother pops off "Huh, guess that's your firework!!" And then of course she got on the phone to EVERYONE to tell them the news.

I think I was 10, so that would have been 29 years ago. Young for that day and age, I think.

I have an almost 11 year old and the signs are all there. Everytime she yells, "MOM!" from the bathroom, I take a deep breath and collect myself. Luckily so far it's just been for a fresh towel or a new bar of soap, but I know the day is coming. I just want to react "right", if you know what I mean. My Mom bursted out crying and I DON'T want to do that.

I was 9 1/2 when I started. And I'm an old woman now, so, yes, girls did start early back then too. I was the 4th girl in my class to start.
I remember it vividly. The girls bathroom at school only had 2 stalls that had doors on them. The rest were open stalls. The stalls wit doors were only supposed to be used if it was your time of month. I used to sneak in them all the time, but invarably, someone would tell on me. After I started they couldn't rat on me all the time.

My oldest dd was 10 1/2 when she started and younger dd was 13 when she started.

My 5th grader had the "movie and talk" at school Tuesday. All the parents were invited but she did not want me to be there. Only 1 mother showed up and her daughter cried the whole time she was so embarrassed.

My 10 year old has 2 older sisters and is very prepared (they have virtually tortured the poor kid!- the joy of having a younger sister!) and she is all very matter of fact. She just doesn't want to have it happen to HER. It will mess up her basketball and all.

She did say that in one of the other 5th grade classes, 14 girls had already started. Only 1 from her class.

This is so young. I was 17, my older 2 daughters were 13. My 18 year old son never went through puberty so we are doing hormone injections monthly on him. We were laughing because I was talking to my youngest and I said "just think you and Matthew will be going through puberty together!" She did not think this was funny!

What can I say, my kids are my entertainment!!! Being a nurse just makes these body functions that much worse. Everything is very matter of fact around here. My son is always saying TMI when the girls get talking. Someday I hope he makes a great husband after having 3 sisters!

I remember reading something awhile back regarding hormones in milk and meat and the effects they have on our children's bodies. After all, they are used to grow a cow in a short amount of time, just imagine how it could work on kids! They used the example of 8 year olds having pubic hair and menstrual cycles. My daughter will be 8 in a couple of months, and I am hoping I don't have to deal with any of this for several more years!

I also have boy/girl twins who will be 10 on 1/29. I already had the talk with my daughter because she is developing little breast buds and pubic hair and she is prepared, but she is mature for her age and even brings extra underwear and a couple of pads to school just in case. I started when I was 11 years old. My son is not ready for the talk yet for various reasons. I did not buy a book but there are some good ones out there. I know there is one for girls that is published by the group that published "Our Bodies, Our Selves". I printed some good information from a website called www.girlspace.com that was good. This site is sponsored by Kotex and it even has message boards for the girls. I will have to tell you all some of the funny stories related to "the talk" and why I know my son is not quite ready to hear "the talk" yet. I will relate it when I have a little more time. Nowadays, if a girl starts her period too young, like 4 or 5, they usually will give her medicine to suppress it until she is older-that is way too young and I can not imagine how someone that young would handle it!

I have heard this too and it certainly makes since. If cows are injected with hormones to produce more milk, sure those hormones end up in our system. It must have some sort of affect on us, and it seems very common for young girls to be starting their cycle.

Also, I have heard that around 100 pounds is the "trigger" weight for a girl to start her cycle. My daughter is big-boned and tall like me, so I thought there was a possibility of her starting early, but she had hers at 13 yrs (thank goodness). I was a late bloomer, and didn't start mine until 15.

If 100 lbs. is a guideline, my DD could be 15 or older before she starts. She is almost 12 and weighs about 68 lbs. I was very thin and probably didn't weigh 100 until about age 14. (I weighed 115 as a senior.) I started at 12.

DD's friends are all a little older (about 6 months) and many of them have started and others will probably start soon. DD is probably a year or so away I think. Very few signs.

Oh my goodness... I'm not ready for all of this! Oldest DD will be 9 in three weeks. I just bought her some bra's last week for the first time. I noticed getting her out of the shower that she's beginning to show signs of developing. Then a few nights later, I noticed her arm pits stunk. I'm really hoping that part was due to needing a shower! She was my first baby...she's too young for all this - at least I think she is!

Weight, signs of developing, none of this matters. I'm a frequent (daily) volunteer at DS's middle school (5-6). It was close to the end of the school year last year when a 5th grade girl was in the office waiting on her dad to bring something for her cramps. This girl was string bean thin, absolutely no shape or figure. In fact, the girl is still super slender and no figure.

My first daughter was 10 and I didn't know until about 5 months after she did-I had a good supply of personal items in the kids bathroom just in case and when I went to store more items under cabinet I notice the supply was depleted so I inquired and my daughter said -oh yeah -I forgot to tell you. Guess she didn't need my help. I always thought she was mature for her age(now 12) but,oh my goodness they grow up to fast!

I got my first one when I was 13...................ON MOTHERS DAY.
Yep....first one was on Mothers Day.

The grownups were telling jokes but I did not see what was so funny.

My cousin who is six weeks older than me got hers when she was 6 and also started to develop. Everyone seemed sad about it.
