Do you swap eggs at the supermarket?

If you need to buy eggs, and when you open the container to check them, and see a cracked egg, will you take it out and swap it for another egg from a different container?

I went through no less than 10 packs of eggs today, looking for one that didn't have a cracked egg in it. I finally ended up taking the cracked egg out and replacing it for a decent egg. But I felt slightly guilty. Almost like I was stealing.

Is it appropriate to swap out eggs??

(I figured with all the grocery store talk this would be a good time to ask this question.)

I've never had that problem, usually if there is a bad egg in one container the next container is good.

No, it's not stealing to replace a bad egg with a good one, the price is for a dozen good eggs. If you feel bad you can ask them to do it for you.

I have never had to do it but I wouldn't have a problem if I could not find a carton without a broken egg.

Well I used to go through until I found a perfect container but then I gave that up and just swap an egg if the second container also has a crack. You are purchasing a dozen eggs and they most likely do the exact same thing themselves. They can't sell the cracks so they may as well combine them into one container of "loss" rather than several containers all with one cracked egg.

I have been swapping broken for good eggs for probably 35 years so I hope it is not wrong. Like the other lady said they can;t sell the broken ones. I always leave the carton open of the one I put a broken one in. Gives the next person a warning.

I've never had to do this...However if I open more than 2 cartons and there was a broken one I'd swap and probably complain my little head off too LOL There is always someone working in this dept at my store so they'd get an ear full! Gosh I've gotten cranky lately haha

A clerk at my store was watching me open carton after carton and said " Maam, you can switch the broken ones for good ones"

So, according to Publix, this is OK!

I've had to do that before also, after checking many cartons and always finding at least one broken egg. I don't consider it stealing, I feel as if I'm helping them out because all the broken eggs may end up in that one carton and then they can dispose of it, LOL. Seriously, I haven't had that problem often but it has happened and I really don't think any grocery store would mind you swapping a good egg for a bad one.

I do it all the time - not just cracked ones, but "blotchy" ones that look funny to me. The dairy guy saw me do it once and asked if there was a cracked one, I said no, just didn't like that one. He didn't say a word, so I assume it's fine. I think it's a given that people are not going to buy cracked eggs.

I wouldn't consider it stealing because you didn't stick the egg in your pocket!!!

When I open a carton and there's an egg broke, I just close it back up and open another carton until I find the one I want.

I think it would be wrong if someone were switching out, say, small eggs for the extra large eggs in order to get bigger eggs but paying for the smaller ones.

I do it all the time. If there are broken eggs in the carton, I try another one, and then I switch out the discolored looking eggs.

I dont swap eggs but I will keep checking carton after carton until I find one that does not have broken eggs in it.

My son and I checked for about 4 minutes the other day before I finally gave up and bought medium eggs.

Sort of off-topic, but our store goes through and repackages the unbroken ones that are leftover in the boxes that people don't because of broken eggs... They sell them as Medium but lots of times there are X-Large eggs in there. They price at 59 cents and they are just fine!

I just go through all the cartons until I find one that doesn't have cracked eggs. At the bottom of the egg case, there is a box where you can put cracked egg cartons....

Anyone remember the movie Clerks..where the crazy egg people would do all sorts of experiments..like rolling the eggs on the floor..always in search of THE perfect dozen.. lol

We are crazy egg people. I also will not take the "first" of anything. Like the package of cheese at the front of the display, or a gallon of milk from the front. I always take one from the back..that's a whole new thread.....

I feel much better. I always touch the eggs and move them around in the package, each egg, just to make sure it is not cracked on the bottom and sticking to the package.

I am very picky about my produce and eggs. I refuse to buy certain fruits/veggies if they are not up to my standards.

I was searching for the perfect 18-ct eggs. I didn't find the perfect one, but after swapping out the bad egg (honestly, I did go through at least 10 packs of eggs - even digging way into the back of the refrigerated area) I felt satisfied. One other egg looked kind of bumpy, but I can live with that.

At least now I know that this is considered normal. I have been tempted to go through the eggs and make my perfect dozen, but I would never go that far. But now I know that many people swap, and won't feel guilty trading the cracked egg for a perfect one.

Thanks!!~

I've never swapped eggs, but I do keep opening cartons until I get one without any broken/dirty eggs. I usually only have to open 2 or 3.

I was taught to check all eggs, and swap as needed, and to not buy milk that had directly been exposed to fluorescent lights, because it would tastes funny. However, I was also taught to NEVER make a basket of fruit bigger by taking from another one, or otherwise make something a bit better than it should be. My mother snapped at a woman who was doing that with strawberries once, and the women left fast. Bear in mind, my mother's a very gentle person.

It's not theft to not buy damaged merchandise, but it is to add on beyond the value something's meant to have.

I will go through several looking for a good carton. I give each egg a wiggle to make sure it's not cracked on the bottom. When I do swap out eggs, I leave the carton open so that the next person can easily see that it contains broken eggs.

I am not sure but I think throwing them might be wrong. Thanks for my giggle- I just read this and my son wondered what I was laughing at.

No I never thought of that but where I live they are at most a day off.

A lesson I learned years ago on some newsmagazine type show- the expiration dates can vary on the exact same eggs. Also different companies use different expiration time limits. If you want the freshest eggs look on the carton for the 3 digit code near the date - that is the "mfr" date so look for the highest number. For instance I just went to my fridge and checked the eggs I have the number is 004 which means they were produced on the 4th day of the calander year.

well if people are swaaping the eggs ,it doesn't matter anymore what the carton said,it is just a guessing game ,at athat point...the eggs should be stamped with the date instead...
