Unhappy Insurance question

DH and I have a home and we have both flood insurance and regular homeowners. (We are not in a flood zone, but with all the hurricanes we had, we got scared into buying it!)

We had a flood in our home tonight from a burst pipe - I can't find anything about that particular thing in either my homeowners policy or my flood policy. Each policy has a different deductible... any idea which it would fall under?? The deductibles are $1K difference, so it really matters and I don't want to call the ins co to ask and throw up a flag...

Help

My brother had this happen and he only had regular insurance and it covered everything...Your best bet would be contacting your agent and ask... thats what they are paid for.

I'm not sure but it seems that Flood Insurance is for the natural disaster type of flood - not a burst pipe. I think this falls under your homeowner's policy. Good luck.

Are you talking about a burst pipe in your house? Homeowners.

Had a similar problem last year and it falls under homeowners. You need to call you insurance agent, they will send people to help with the water damage. I had a washing machine hose burst and came home to inches of water, in many rooms. It was a nightmare that didn't end for months!!

Did you know that the water hooked up to the machine is on at all times?? And that to prevent this problem all you need to do is buy $20 hoses that don't burst!!! I do now!

The insurance company sent over people to dry out the rugs, and then they removed only the damage area of rug. We had big fans running for days. We were told that we need to use these people because if we did not and had a mold issue later on the insurance would not cover it.

I wish you luck with the clean up!

Do you think there is a lot of damage? If not I would not tell them and pay for it myself. And if you are thinking of paying for it yourself don't even call them and ask a question. Even if you just ask they will probably put it in your records and raise your rates anyway. We just increased our deductable to $5,000 because there is no way we would put in a claim for less then that. Too many people pay for years and never use it. Put in a claim and get canceled. It's sad when you have been with them for 20 years but are afraid to ever use them.

It depends on the specific situation. For example an earthquake comes and knocks down your hot water heater. The hot water floods the laundry room. It is up to your insurance company to make the determination whether they consider it to be earthquake damage or flood damage. This is the way they screw people too. If you have no flood insurance then you can bet your life that your company will call it a "flood".
