Need Advice On Alternate Communion Gift

WELL MY GODSON IS RECEIVING COMMUNION AND MY BROTHER N LAW REFUSES TO GIVE OUT HIS SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER TO ME OR HIS GRANDPARENTS. HE SAYS TOO MANY PROBLEMS WITH IDENTITY THEFT ON KIDS. HE FINALLY GAVE IN TO MY MOM BUT TOLD HER THAT SHE CAN'T GIVE IT TO ME OR ANYONE ELSE. MY MOM SAYS IF I GIVE HER THE MONEY THAT SHE WILL ORDER. WHAT ELSE CAN I GIVE? HE DOESN'T NEED A CROSS OR JEWELRY SO I WAS THINKING OF AN AMERICAN EXPRESS GIFT CHEQUE OR A TOYS R US CERTIFICATE. WHAT WOULD YOU DO OR GIVE ANY SUGGESTIONS APPRECIATED.......

A savings bond would be a great gift idea. As far as I know it does not require a SS#. I'm wondering if the OP was trying to do some college fund or something. My parents did savings bonds for my son and he has quite a bit of money worth right now.

I am not sure what gift you were planning on giving that needed a SS# but since you are the godparent I would tell the parents your intention and why you need to have the SS#.

If you are wanting to get a savings bond (?) you could use your name and social security number and have the you and the child listed as co-owners, if you use the word (or) not (and) he will still be able to cash it later on down the road without your signature. Or would your sister giver you her SS and have her as the co-owner. Has to be someone you trust though as they would have the right to cash it at anytime.

I thought you always needed a social security number to buy a bond. I would prefer my nephews if this is the case so that there isn't any problems down the line. If the gift is being given to him and a social security number is needed which always has been then I don't see why they won't supply this. I don't think they have to worry about identity theft with his aunt/Godmother. I have always given my kids # when relatives asked.

You can use your own SS#. My kids have all received bonds with the givers SS# on them.

I agree with yngsto6. You don't need the child's ss# on the bond to put his name on it. I've bought several bonds as gifts for various occassions and always just used my own ss#.

I would either have your mom fill out the paper like she is you (or you fill it out, except the SSN) and have her take it and get the savings bond, or use your SSN and put you as the first owner and him as the co-owner. When the bonds come now, the entire SSN isn't on them, it is only the last 4 digits, so he wouldn't have access to your SSN in the future.
