Punxsutawney Phil Predicts Early Spring


Phil did not see his shadow on Friday which, according to German folklore, means folks can expect an early spring instead of six more weeks of winter.

Since 1886, Phil has seen his shadow 96 times, hasn't seen it 14 times and there are no records for nine years, according to the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club. The last time Phil failed to see his shadow was in 1999

Each Feb. 2, thousands of people descend on Punxsutawney, a town of about 6,100 people about 65 miles northeast of Pittsburgh, to celebrate what had essentially been a German superstition.

The Germans believed that if a hibernating animal cast a shadow on Feb. 2 - the Christian holiday of Candlemas - winter would last another six weeks. If no shadow was seen, legend said spring would come early.

Me too!!!! Let's hope spring is close at hand. WE had our first snow today, about 2 inches. YUCK. I usually like 1 snow a year but for some reason this year, I just want warm, sunny days!

That groundhog should know when he wakes up to bring spring back right then and there!! Why do I want to wait 6 weeks? I ought to smack that little guy

Heard of it? Yes. Think it's fun every year, Yes! Actually believe it? No!

Me, too. Heard of it all my life but certainly don't believe. Especially after the way the weatherman was predicting this HUGE snow and ice storm yesterday and we got nothing!!

I live in Southern California..... winter and summer are about 40 degrees apart (and we complain it's too cold, he he he). I have never understood the whole folk tale. I would think if he sees his shadow that means the sun is out and spring should be on its way. But what do I know.

I hope srping is on it's way even though we have snow in the schedule for this next week. It also snowed 2 days ago. I am ready for winter to be over.

That's funny Mom2twins, our weatherman predicted flurries and we got the first real snow of the winter. About 3-4 inches!!

In Georgia we have General Lee, the "southern groundhog"!
He lives at the Yellow River Ranch and predicted an early spring as well.
Sometimes he and Punxsutawney Phil do not see eye to eye.
I listen to the one that says spring is on its way!!!!

This morning, it's 4 degrees with a wind chill of -8......so I sure hope Phil is right.....I could use an early spring!!!
