Have You Ever Added Memory To Your Computer?

I just ordered memory-512 to add to my 256mb. I have never done this-Will it make my computer programs open faster? I have a Pent. 4 processor. The startup and shutdown and inbetween seem slow and not a whole lot running on computer. The Dsl speed is good for online.

Yes it will make the programs run faster..There are alot of programs out today that are memory hogs...To help keep my machine running smooth..I always empty history & do a clean disk daily..I run a spyware check every day too...I also defrag my machine atleast every 2 weeks..

My father had a pc that he had never defrag for over year and he was running real slow...It took several attempts to get it to defrag because it so bog down. with everything .It took almost all day to run a complete defrag My dh has help a few people with this problem and it is shocking on how many people doesn't do maintance on their pc..Our neighbor ws so bog down from not defragging it was pitful than dh finally got it fixed

My favourite trick

It is easy, there are instructions here: http://www.ehow.com/how_895_install-ram.html

A defrag is a good idea, but you can also clear out programs that are running in the background that you don't need. Go to Start > Run > and type in msconfig and press enter. Choose the Startup tab. Look up all the checked items in Google to decide whether you need them or not. Do remember that things like Quick Time and iTunes are not necessary unless you're running the program, so shut those off. Ditto for MSN Messenger, and any MS Works items. You can turn these item on later if you'd like. When you restart your computer, choose 'Don't Show Again' to the message that will pop up. If you've never done this before, this will clear up a lot of RAM to use. Leave the non-Startup tabs alone, though!

Thank you! I did not know how to do this and was so easy to follow your directions!
