Geez, I can't even picture it. I am sweating today. It is 81 here. UGH - I wish we had some kind of winter! Maybe we should all trade homes for a few months, and you could live here and enjoy the warmth, and I could live there and enjoy the cold. LOL! :O)

Yes it is cold and I am ready for spring. Thank goodness March is next month and I hope that means good news.

I am ready for Easter Egg Hunts. Sniff Sniff I need spring flowers and shorts and Tshirts.

I know we had it good for awhile but I sure do miss it.

It's WAY too cold for my liking..yuck!
I can see the schools closing in this area tomorrow too. I mean, honestly, what's 2 hrs really going to do? Maybe go up 1 degree???
We're hoping for a delay because the school my kids attend is stupid on how they handle arrivals. The kids are required to stand outside until first bell! Even the k-5's are to stand outside until one of the teachers come down to get them. I've been keeping dd in the car until I see the teacher open the door so she don't have to stand out in the cold.

Our winter finally arrived here in Ma (not like I was missing it....) We had our first snow fall Friday night- about 4 inches. Now we are in the grip of the cold spell, though not quite as bad as you guys. We are at 2degrees this am with a wind chill of -8. Kids just got on the bus, and I will be enjoying this day in all it's glory out on my route today, and Mondays are always loooong days.

OMG! I can't believe that, at least at our school, the kids can go to the cafeteria until first bell. And they can get dropped off as early as 7am... If they ride a bus, they stay on the bus till the first bell rings.

I am located between Evansville and Terre Haute.

We have no delays this morning. But 30 miles east of me has a two hour delay.

we have a 2 hour delay, but my DS catches the bus at 6:50am so the 2 hours at least gets the sun out and maybe a little warmer, but when its this cold, its going to have to get ALOT warmer to make a difference.

That's just it, with temps like this 2 hours don't make any difference. It's still below zero with wind chill and these kids are forced to stand out in it. You don't see ANY adults waiting outside with the k-5s when they arrive. I stand up there with them when it's nice out to keep an eye on them because I would never leave my daughter to stand there with NO supervision. This school just don't care about the students much at all. The "bus line mod" don't go outside to bring the kids in until it's actually time to. There are no teachers or "mods" outside for the walkers/car riders. They stand outside the main doors until the first bell. So, if you had to head into work early and had to drop off your child 20 mins before school starts, that's how long they would be outside in this nasty cold weather. I just don't think that's right.

It is Zero degrees right now and going to hit a high of 5 degrees today.

AshnZach,

That is terrible to keep them waiting outside.
I bet if the people who make these rules had to stand out there those rules would change fast!!!

They did not close the schools and it is -6 feels like -26.

I think school should have been closed because of all of the kids that have to stand out in it. My DH just drove our kids down to the bus stop and I will drive the others to school later.

I live in Fort wayne

We are in NW OH and have a mixture of delays (2 hrs) and cancellations. We are on the 2 hour delay and I do no think the temperature has changed in the last 2 hours. DD was silly enough to spend about 5-10 min. outside yesterday without gloves and her hands were red. I told her to wear the gloves, but she thought they were too big to do the chore she was working on. Silly girl. I stressed the gloves and hat for today and the bus. Even if you are out fo 5 min., you need them.

My dh just called and said the school would "excuse" any child called in today because of the cold. Too bad they waited until AFTER most of them have already headed to the bus stop to annouce it.
I'm driving my kids to school. Just dropped the oldest off at the high school but they're allowed inside right away. I'll be waiting until just a few mins before school starts to drop off my ds and will be having dd stay in the car until the teacher comes to collect her for 1/2 day K.

And you're absolutely right grannyshirl! They tell you to bring in your pets because of this cold but they have children standing outside instead of letting them into the caf. or gym. It's wrong.

I just went to weather.com and the Wind Chill Advisory said

"BRISK WINDS AND BITTERLY COLD AIR WILL PRODUCE WIND CHILL TEMPERATURES RANGING FROM 25 BELOW TO 30 BELOW ZERO UNTIL ABOUT 10 AM THIS MORNING. THIS IS COLD ENOUGH FOR EXPOSED FLESH TO FREEZE IN ABOUT 10 MINUTES. DO NOT VENTURE OUTSIDE UNPREPARED THIS MORNING.".

The temperature is -5 feels like -29 .. Many schools have been canceled for today. It's been a long time since it was this cold ....When is spring getting here???

See! This is what I mean! They are issuing warnings about frostbite but yet this school makes the kids stand OUTSIDE in the cold until first bell! Makes me want to go in and drag that stupid principal outside and make her stand out there for a good 20 mins and see how she likes it!

reading all the posts make me glad that my kids school let them in. The first bell rings at 8:10a with the last bell ringing at 8:30a. They can get dropped off as early as 7a. But they have to go to the cafeteria where there is an aide. Then at 8a there are teachers out front directing traffic and tending to kids till 8:25a.

The bus kids do not even get off the bus till the 8:10 bell. Even if they have to wait 20mins on the bus...

Now a days with all the kidnappings and everything else these sickos do, I am surprised that these schools can get a way with not supervising the kids in the mornings and just letting them stand outside.

The threat of those "sickos" are why I stand up with the k-5 kids. Most come in by bus and are just dropped off. Others have their parents sitting in the car keeping an eye on them. I'm way protective of my kids so I stand right up there with dd until she's inside the school doors with the teacher. I've tended to scraped knees and misunderstandings several times. The little ones don't like to just line up, they're excited to see each other everyday so ,of course, they want to play a bit before heading in. I try to remind them to becareful and not get too loud because the principal had complained about how loud they were getting *insert rolling eyes here*.

My oldest is 10. And I would not even let him stand outside by himself.

AshnZach's I am right there with you.. I don't leave my kids anywhere. Not ball practice, or anything. Some say that I am TO OVERPROTECTIVE but you know what. At least I am not one of those mom's that just drop and go... To many times a child gets hurt. (mine included). I want to know and be there to help.

Sorry, kind of got of topic...

Dh says the same thing about me. That I'm too overprotective but in today's society you have to be. So many sickos and bad things happening to the little ones, I'm not taking any chances.
Heck, I don't like my almost 16 yr old dd walking to bus stop in the mornings(it's about 1/4 mile away). Always worried something might happen to her.

Well they closed school for tomorrow already. The biggest reason was the buses.

I had to go get my middle school kids after they waited 45 mins after school at the school because they didn't have a bus to bring them home. I did see the middle school bus at about 4:45 pm that is 2 hours and 10 mins after school got out.

AshnZach, that school sounds like the school where my dgd goes. Walkers and car riders wait outside until a certain time, (not sure what time as she rides the bus) Is it in a city school or county school? The one I'm referring to begins with M. There are several registered sex offenders in that general area also. Great place for young kids to be out and unattended. And now to freeze in the process.

This morning, after a 2 hour delay, it was announced on tv that the buses were running late and parents should take the kids to school in the cars. I called to see if her bus was running late and all I got was a recording, announcing the same as I had just heard on tv. But it went on to say any kids who were late or absent would not be counted as such. Seeing how my car wouldn't start either, she was home all day.

As it turned out, many of the busses fuel was gelling up. Found that out from a friend who drives a bus for the same system dgd goes to.

It's now almost 8 pm and the local city schools have already been announced as closed tomorrow, but so far all the county schools are on a 2 hour delay again. How much sense does that make being it's supposed to be as cold or colder in the morning???

Our schools are closed again tomorrow. I figured they would be since we still have a wind chill advisory up til tomorrow afternoon.

I have to laugh at you guys. You live in the midwest and it's February. Guess what, that's winter time! It was -15 here last week NOT COUNTING windchill and -35 if you count it.

Hopefully it won't last long. It was 64 here in Montana today so I'm sure we'll send it your way like we did the deep freeze.

It's not the cold I'm complaining about. It's the fact my children are FORCED to sit outside in it because of the lack of judgement by the school they attend!
Barb- it's a FWCS school. It's a city school. Thankfully we live not too far from the school so I can be there in a hurry if need be. I was 3rd in line to pick up today because I got there 40mins before they left out. I couldn't believe how long the car pick up line was. So glad I decided to head out early so I could get them home and into a warm house.

Indiana has never had weather like this for so many days in a row. It's one thing to have a 0 degree day but it's another to have almost a week of it. We can handle snow, ice, sleet, hail, and even the occasional tornados at wierd times but this weather is brutal! I have lived in my house for five years and our pipes have NEVER frozen. Now, our master sink is frozen for running water and in the same bathroom our master drain for the shower is frozen but the toilet works and so does the water in the shower. My parents moved to another house from a house they have been living in for 30 years and their drains have never frozen and my mom called me today and said their kitchen sink drain was frozen but the water still runs...it's very bizaar. They are trying to sell this house and it doesn't look good to have standing water in the kitchen sink. I told her to get out the wet/dry vac if scalding water being poured down the drain doesn't work. Do you think pouring a canister of table salt down the drain would work? It's biodegradable so I know it won't hurt whereas pouring window solvant (the spitter fluid from your windshield wipers) would.

Yes I agree, that is EXACTLY what I don't understand! Thank god I have a neighbor that we can take turns with to car pool, she picks up my son in the morning and drives him to the bus stop and I pick up the kids up in the afternoon and take them home. If it weren't for her I would be S.O.L in the mornings because of the fact we do not have a second vehicle right now and the shift my husband is on.

I also pick my DD and her friends at her stop in the afternoon, and they appreciate it too because they have to walk a little further.

I talked to a friend yesterday and her HOT water pipes froze up! She had left the cold ones running a small stream and had no idea that she should do the hot water ones too.

I wasn't aware that the Hot would freeze up.

I feel your pain, we hit a record low yesterday of -31 (and that is without wind chill added in. This is the price you pay for being so close to the Canadian border in North Dakota ` quite honestly too cold for this Tennessee girl but home is where the Air Force sends us. I am thankful that we are up to -4 today and the wind has died down. It is a cold that hurts when you breathe in. School doesn't go on delays for snow here very often. I believe they do close school if it drops down too low....but what exactly too low is I don't know.

Oh yea, we found that out last winter. Our house is heated by hot water (radiated) and the 3rd floor hot water froze which also mean the heat. It wasn't pretty.

I also agree with you on kids outside in the subzero temps. Here in Montana we don't have snow days. I'm serious, we don't have them. We had -42 (actual temp) in 1994 (all time record low) and school was still going. The buses wouldn't run so all the parents were driving their kids. The rule here is if it's below zero (counting wind chill) the kids will be kept inside before and during recess. They do enforce that pretty good, so I won't complain about that. I feel 0 is a good cut off temp as long as you include the wind chill.

We moved here from Las Vegas in 1993 and I'm still trying to adjust to this. We moved here to "experience seasons" again. Bwaahaaa, what a crock! I'd give this up in a heartbeat. I'm not a cold weather person.

When I worked at the 911 center during the winter of 2004 and 2005, we had one time where the temp was in the negative, wind was whipping at about 25 MPH, snow was falling and blowing. Near white out conditions. Sheriff Liedle went on TV/Radio and requested that people should only travel if NECESSARY. So, we get the superintendent of schools calling and asking "does that mean we can run the busses?" Well, I don't know is it MANDATORY that the kids get to school? Conditions are hazardous, near white out conditions, etc. So, the superintendent of schools, DID NOT cancel school--after all, this is "typical Montana Weather". Then the calls started coming in from the parents wanting to know WHY school wasn't cancelled and wanting to have charges pressed against the superintendent of schools!!! Oy Vey that was fun morning! One parent actually INSISTED on speaking to an officer! Luckily one was in the law enforcement center!

(in case this all sounds a little strange to some of you--Ilovezingers and I live in the same area!)

Where is the concern for our children??

There is NO concern for the children. It's the almighty dollar that is the big concern. How much allotment the schools get from the state.

My dd and neice both drive bus for FWCS. Some of the horror stories they can tell about trying to bus kids in on Monday is totally unreal.
Dd's bus was one of the few that was running (because she knows more about the maintainence of it than what was being told by the garage) so she ran the bus "literly" the whole entire day. After she got what few of her kids that actually went to school to their various schools she began just driving around the city, picking up ANY kids she saw standing out waiting on buses that were NOT running. At one point she had kids on for 6 different schools and had to deliver to all those schools.
She picked up one stop where there were 2 brothers, one about a third grader and one kindergartener. The little one was sobbing histarically in pain because his hands were so cold. Both were bundled as well as possible. She tried repeatedly to get on the bus radio to seek help for him, but the radio was so busy she couldn't get through. She ended up driving to the nearest school where there was a fireman on duty. He got on the bus with her to delivery the child back to his home. hoping a parent would be there. Luckily, parents were there so fireman took the child to the door and instructed the parents on how to treat his frostbite. Since then, she has been very concerned, wondering if the little guy is ok now.

Buses were stranded all over the area, some with kids aboard, some just the drivers.
Of those with kids aboard and not buses available to retrieve them, there were supervisors in personal vans taking as many kids off buses that they could possibly hold. Under state law (and under normal conditions) thats is a BIG NO NO.

This all goes back to the almighty dollar again.
As of this year the buses are using bio desil (sp) fuel instead of what they have always used. THIS WAS TO SAVE MONEY. And again TO SAVE MONEY, they opted to not have the aditive put into it.
Consequently, when the tempature gets below a certain point the fuel will "wax" up as opposed to geling up as the old type fuel would do.
In using the old type fuel, if it did gel up the driver could add extra additive and thet would "ungel" it. With the kind they have now, once it "waxes" up it has to be "warmed" up to free it. Additive will NOT work until the fuel warms.

Another stupid trick one school pulled was to not cancil a field trip, taking elementry students swimming.
It's like "duh", those kids will be coming out with wet hair into those sub 0 temps.

THis is just SOME of the actions of our "great" school system.

Like I said, it's nothing but the almighty dollar to them. NOT about the well being of the kids.

Yes and we are one of the states that do not have free textbooks for all students, I heard they were trying to work on that one but we shall see.

They always call it school book rental and then turn around and say if you damage this textbook you will have to pay for it, well didn't we already pay? and the parents before that paid? Which children shouldn't be tearing up the books or being destructive by no means but I think you can understand what I am getting at.

Anyways, back to the weather now we have snow!!!! Just what we all wanted!

I was watching all that on the news last night. It was terrible how many children were left out in the cold. They should have just closed the schools to begin with.
I truely hope this is one lesson they learned from.
That poor child hurting so bad that he was in tears! I hope he's doing alright.
Like I said, the "choice" of keeping your children home and the warning of the non running buses came in WAY too late. They should have been more on the ball with all this.

I live in NW Allen Co School district and we have only had 2 hour delays thus far. I think that any school leaving children in the bitter cold should be repremanded for their actions. Our school will not let kids into the school before 7:30AM, but I am not sure what they do with temperatures like these. I would be livid if my children were locked out of the school in this weather

It is snowing now with a 2Hour delay tomorrow already, yuck...THINK SPRING!! My poor bulbs were coming up already from those warm months, they are probably frostbitten already. Oh well, just a precursor to the beautiful Spring and Summer months.
