Carrie's Rant: Medicine

Ok I try not to harp on this but I feel I need to say this. When your Dr. Prescribes a script and you receive a paper with all the different warnings on them I want you all to stop and think. Is that side effect something that I can live with for the REST of my life? So often we get our medicine and assume that the pharmacist will say "hey watch out for these side effects" They don't always and the rare side effects are hardly ever mentioned. These rare side effects can happen and guess what...They can happen to you.

I can finally talk about this now. My mother was given a med for depression. She was handed the list of side effects. At the bottom of the list was something that she only had a 1% chance of getting. Well in our minds that will never happen 1% that means nothing....Right? Wrong. She is that 1% she has lost everything. All because she didn't make the decision that she couldn't live with this side effect she assumed it wouldn't happen to her. She was given the wrong med for what she had. But she was still handed the warning.

My Mom is finally able to afford it all because she won a lawsuit. The problem is ..... She really doesn't know she can afford it all. She had a stroke and has lost so much all because of a 1%.

So if I can do anything I can warn everyone I run into that Read and Decide. Assume that you will get those side effects and watch for them. Ususally they are reversible but sometimes not. Be wise and understand how your meds work and why you are taking them. Don't ever take a drug just because the Dr. Says too. Question your Dr. question the pharmacist go to the web look up everything you can. Understand everything and if you don't find someone who does.

Sorry guys I have been dying to do this.
Carrie

So sorry about your mom and her medication.

A person also to go on their gut instinct sometimes. DH was taking Aleve and having blood pressure problems. This was listed as a side effect. However, because the pharmacist and doctor never knew of anyone to have this side effect, they didn't see it as the culprit. DH stopped the med and his blood pressure returned to normal.

We've become either too trusting or too lazy to look up the facts for ourself.

I think that it is a little bit of both. With meds today they are so good but also so new and not tested well enough.

Your husband was very smart to stop. Your right trust your gut.

Between being born to a reasonably inquisitive mother, and having spent some time without health insurance, I've learned how to treat a lot of ailments at home. What bothers me is seeing how people will point out the dangers of a herbal treatment, but assume that a prescribed one is safe. ALL medicines have their risks, regardless of their origin. It should be safe to assume that a doctor has chosen the best option for you from what they had to choose from, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't bother researching it. If someone is prescribing something to you, please ask about it; it's your doctor's job to know what they're giving you, and how it works.
