Updated - It was a tumor - Anyone ever had a ganglion removed?

I am having outpatient surgery on Tuesday to have a ganglion removed from my wrisit (palm side). The procedure only takes about 20 minutes (outpatient). The doctor told me I could return to work the next day but I would need to stop by his office the next morning for him to look at it but then I could be on my way to my 11 am appointment. I was looking on Yahoo Answers and some folks posted that they had to wear large bandages sometimes with a splint. I do have to pull a bag with my hand to appointmentments but not really lift stuff.

I know there is a chance it can come back but it is smack in the middle of my wrist by the base of my palm and I end up hitting it all the time . . . I have had it for over a year so it is not just going to go away.

Any input is appreciated.

Maddy

I never had one but I know in the past people used to sometimes hit them with a book to break them up and get rid of them. Could you imagine? ! Ouch!

My 11 year old son has one that is HUGE in about the same spot where you describe yours to be! His doctor also told us about when people used to smash them inside a book to break them up! Yikes!

Please please come back and tell us about your experience with this as he may end up having his cut open too as it just keeps getting bigger.

Good Luck!

I have had one drained several times. After the last time, the dr. said we would try taking it out if it grew again. It hasn't grown at all really since last time it was drained. Of course it looks gross draining it. It was infected the first time and the stuff coming out looked like bright green apple jelly. The other times it just looked like k-y jelly. Hurt pretty bad too after it was drained, but not for long.

Thank you all for your replies. They actually used to call these Bible Bumps because as posted by several of you they would just hit them with a large heavy book like a bible to break them up . . . They are basically a large cyst of the fluid found in your joints.

Like I mentioned this guy is one of the best in NYC so I am confident that I have a skilled doctor on the job . . . I was mostly concerned about afterwards. The one I have is about the circumfrence of a dime but it protrudes high up.

I will report back as soon as I can . . . If anyone else has anything to share -- good or bad please feel free to add

I had one on my wrist some years back and had it aspirated. I honestly don't even remember when/where it was done - hospital or dr. office - or any side effects/recovery. I guess that means it wasn't a big deal...or is like childbirth and you just forget it. somehow LOL. Mine never returned.

I had one removed at the base of the thumb on the palm side of my hand. It was overkill because they took me in the hospital and did it as outpatient surgery. Recovery was not any big deal. A few years later, hubby had one removed at the base of ring finger and then one on the top of his hand within a year of each other. He just met the family dr. at the ER and he gave him a shot to numb the area and removed them with no problems.

Post how it goes... I have 3 (1 on each hand at the base of my thumbs, and one on my wrist palm side down). I am such a chicken that I have just dealt with the pain lol.

Good luck with everything!!!

I had one for years (popped a few times, & drained once) finally had it removed 3 yrs. ago on the top of my wrist. It was done out patient and the Dr. told me I'd have a splint, but he failed to mention the "splint" was plaster and couldn't be removed for 2 wks. (Basically a half cast.) Then I was told I'd need physical therapy afterwards because I didn't really have any mobility in my wrist anymore. Something happened and I never went, but I just worked on it myself and everything's better than before.

It sounds like ones on the bottom of the wrist are easier than on the top. Mine was a hassle, but totally worth it!!!!

Good luck!!! It sounds like yours will be easy. (I hope I didn't scare you)

Turns out it was actually a tumor. The doctor says he is sure it is benign but it is being sent out to be tested. I have a lot of gauze on my hand and no pain but it does get numb if I don't keep it up.

Thanks for all of the kind words and support. Will write more when I know more.

Had one removed in my wrist about 8 years ago,,very painless for me and have absolutely no prooblems since. Went right back to work and did not have to wear anything at all......and I had been living with this thing for a couple of years before I had it taken out. Should have done it sooner.

If the doc said it looked benign, it probably is.....he sees so many they can usually tell by sight. But I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers just in case.
