Question Bar Mitzvah Gift?

My DS has been invited to his first Bar Mitzvah and I'm clueless about what he should give as a gift. I've never been to a bar mitzvah, so I need some help. I was told by a friend that a "nice birthday gift" would be appropriate. Any ideas (are there any traditional gifts?)?

I really don't know the child's interests (they're on a sports team together, but haven't known each other very long), so it's difficult to even know where to start.

Thanks!

As far as I know, the traditional gift for a Bar/Bat Mitzvah is money. Usually in increments of 18, as the number 18 in the Jewish faith is important.

Here is some more info for you.

If you are giving a gift of money, then yes, increments of $18 are customary.

However, gift cards (Game Stop, B & N, clothing stores, etc.) from friends are perfectly acceptable.

Just to clarify, the number 18 represents life. Each Hebrew letter also has a numeric value. Hebrew is read from right to left. Chai is spelled with 2 letters: the first letter's value is 10 and the second letter's value is 8. Depending upon how close your child is with the bar mitzvah boy, you can give your gift in increments of $18 ($54 or $72). Don't stress!!!

All answers are dead on If you go with $ $36 is appropriate -- double chai which is the number 18 or as noted above life. A $50 bond would also be an appropriate gift. Bonds are nice as they are usually cashed out to help pay for college later.

What a wonderful thing to share. I hope he has a lovely time.
