For the teachers....

For those of you that have had to administer standardized testing, I'm sure you will appreciate this. The FCAT is the Florida State test. Insert your state test name where necessary .

Administering Peppermints

Script for Administering Grade 5-12 Peppermint Candy

SESSION 1 (5 minutes)

Due to the invalidation of many FCAT scores around the state, distribution of any material or substance MUST be properly communicated for security purposes. Therefore the Florida Department of Education has issued the following directions to be read verbatim to ALL students when passing out "Peppermints."

Before testing, count the peppermints provided for you by the state of Florida. Remember to completely verify peppermint substances for students who are absent during Session 1.

Before reading this script:
1. Review the script for familiarity. You are required to read the script VERBATIM.
2. Post the SSS Session 1 Peppermint Consumption Sign.

SAY:
"At this time, I will distribute a peppermint to each student. Do not open or eat the peppermint until told to do so."

At this time, distribute one peppermint to each student. If a peppermint appears broken or cracked, return it to your test distributor with the rest of your materials. Find a more suitable peppermint for that student.

As you distribute the mints, be sure students do not open or eat the candy. Be sure that you yourself do not eat the peppermints.

SAY:
"The only materials on your desk should be one red and white peppermint. Examine your peppermint. Make sure it is, in fact, a peppermint. If you notice that it is NOT a peppermint, raise your hand now."

"Now, twist the wrapper and remove the peppermint."

SAY:
"Next, we need to be sure that the wrapper has been completely removed from the peppermint. Start with the top of the peppermint and examine each angle for any problems or remaining bits of plastic wrapper."

"If there are any problems, raise your hand. If you do not have a problem, place the mint on your desk and sit quietly."

If necessary, pause to assist students with removing the wrappers from the candy. If a student cracks, chips, or soils his or her peppermint during this process, distribute a new mint to the student and allow them time to unwrap the new peppermint.

SAY:
"Soon you will begin eating the peppermint. You will have five minutes to completely eat the peppermint. You may not use water, but you may lick, suck, or bite the peppermint if you find it helpful.”

“If you finish the peppermint before time is called, go back and remember how delicious your peppermint tasted. Do not move on and try to eat another peppermint. Remember, while eating the peppermint you may not:

*eat any other peppermint or candy-like treat
*take or make any disturbance
*look at another student's peppermint.”

"When you have finished the peppermint to the best of your ability and gone back to remember how delicious it was, sit quietly at your desk until everyone has finished or time is called.”

"Do not rush through eating the peppermint or attempt to swallow it whole. This may lead to choking and your test will be invalidated. If you begin to choke at any time, remain seated and raise your hand. I will perform the Heimlich maneuver to stop you from choking and/or dying.”

"Raise your hand if you have any questions."

If necessary, pause to answer any questions.

SAY:
"Remember, you will have five minutes to eat the peppermint, and I will remind you when you have one minute left."

Then, choose from one of the options below. ONLY read one of the options.
DO NOT read all three options.

Option A

SAY:
"Place the peppermint in your mouth. Close your mouth. You may now begin eating."

Option B

SAY:
"Place the peppermint on your tongue, located inside your mouth. Completely close your mouth around the peppermint. Remember, your tongue, teeth and saliva may be used as tools to help you during this process. You may begin eating."

Option C

SAY:
"Open your mouth and I will walk around and place the mint on your tongue for you. Do not bite my hand during this procedure. Once I have placed the mint on your tongue, close your mouth around the candy. Remember, your tongue, teeth and saliva may be used as tools to help you during this process. You may begin eating."

Complete the following steps:
1. Mark the start and stop time for peppermint consumption.
2. Ensure that each student have begun eating his or her candy.
3. Resist the urge to eat a peppermint.

When one minute remains,

SAY:
"You have one minute remaining to finish eating your peppermint."

After one minute and a total of five minutes from the start time has passed,

SAY:
"Time is finished. If you have any remaining peppermint, spit it out immediately. Do not attempt to swallow your peppermint. As I come around, remove the spit-up peppermint from your desk and place it inside the plastic bag marked "UNCONSUMED PEPPERMINTS". Do not try and save your peppermint for later. This will invalidate your test scores."

Complete the following steps:
1. Collect any remaining peppermints or peppermint fragments. Place them inside the container marked "UNCONSUMED PEPPERMINTS".
2. Place these materials aside and turn them in to your distributor when the entire test has been completed.

Once you have completed the above steps, turn the page and continue to the GRANOLA BAR DISTRIBUTION script for Session 2.

THIS IS THE END OF SESSION ONE. DO NOT MOVE ON UNTIL ALL STUDENTS HAVE COMPLETED THE PEPPERMINT CONSUMPTION PROCESS.
