Help! Anyone know where I can go for assistance with medical bills?

I really don't know what to do here. My husband works full-time, but I don't have insurance and am not currently working. I had some medical problems a few months ago and now have several thousand dollars worth of hospital bills. I desperately need any info on places that may help us with them. I'm not even sure if I'll qualify, but I need to know where to start trying.
Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks
Debby

Depending on how much you make you can try to get on medicaid. If I remember correctly they cover back 3 months. Also check at your hospital/doctor. I know here they offer a care program to where they take off your bill according to your income. I can't remember what the program is called. I know when I had a kidney stone they took off over 3/4 of my bill and helped us. Hope this helps a little.

Will the hospital work with you to set up a payment plan? Then getting paid something is better tham them getting nothing, at least they should look at it that way.

look on the back of your bill..there should be something about charity care and how to apply. I noticed it today on my son's bill.

Not sure what state you are in??? In Arizona, we have AHCCCS (AZ Health Care Cost Containment System). I'm sure each state has it's own program. I'd check the phone book under your state's name for the Department of Economic Security.

Not sure if they help with past bills or if you have to use it at the time of service by doctor?!

I hope that you are feeling better and can get some help.

The united way helps with things like that I know if you are in Florida all you have to do is dial 211 and they pick up and you go from there. You can also go on the web for united way. I would talk to the hospital first though because trust me if everyone paid 5 dollars a month on their outstanding balances with a hospital the hospital would be operating in the red!! I bet that they will work with you!
