Ugh, if a child is sick for a week or more, they are not responsible to test on the material covered that week. My son missed 1.5 weeks of school and I did go and pick up work for him to do at home while he was sick but he didn't have to test on it "unless he felt comfortable". I haven't dealt with your issue but wish you luck

Yes, sounds very hard... ![]() I hope that it works out so that your son is not too stressed over his grades. In a year from now, this will all be forgotten. Thankfully. My son had a very difficult few months when he hit puberty hard at age 11 (yikes!) and even though he did not regain the grades that went down, it was truly character building for him. He now realizes that things could be worse. |

when my daugher was in the 6th grade, at the first of the yr they sent a letter home saying that if she was out for any amount of time , she was required to ask the next day for any homework that she missed. She could not get her parents to call for her the day she was out and ask someone to bring it home, she had to personally ask each teacher when she came back after getting better. she only had the first day back at school to ask, if she forgot , she got a 0 for that homework.said it was to teach them that they are resposible for getting their work. kinda strict but it worked. she never forgot to ask for her homework when she went back.

Does your school have a policy book that states anything about make p assignments when children are out sick? At my school children are generally given 1 day for each day absence. So if your son were absent at our school 5 days he would have 5 school days from the day he returned to make up his work. If he had been absent this past week and returning on Monday, March 5, his work from Feb. 26 - March 2 would be due on March 10 at the latest. When parents call for homework I do try to get it ready for them by 3 p.m. I admit that did not happen today. I received 3 notices by lunchtime for homework for students absent these past two day<> I taught classes until 2:00 p.m. and this was a very unusual day because I was involved in meetings for student evaluations from 2 until 3:30. Noone got homework from me today, but normally I make it available. I also have a website and email that parents may access 24/7. I think you school needs to develop some written policies and move into the 21st. century. Parents say they check my website regularly. I usually update it everyday. It has what was discussed in class, notes, examples, and homework assignments. If the assignments are not in the text the child cannot do them without the papers from me. Our textbooks are also online so if the child does not have it at home and they have a computer they can access them. I am also in Ohio...not the #1 state for education either. You may talk to the principal about being able to impliment some of these changes. Our staff was all given classes on creating a webpage and linking to it. It is very helpful for parents of students who can't remember or don't use an assignment book. I think you and your son were reasonably responsible. I disagree with the school for having hime take the tests the day he returned. I hope changes come about so that he can again feel good about school. |

I would check in your school handbook. Our schools policy is that IF you call in by 1030 am the books and work will be at the front pick up table after 230pm In 6th grade the assistant will write all the missed work on a paper and then place inside the locker if a parent does not call it in. I have not been going to pick her work up since she is sick. If she is sick she does not feel welll enough to do it. Last year we were lucky with one teacher that just asked if you could turn it in at a resonable amount of time. I think that with the work that comes home each AND the missed classwork and homework that you should have more than 1 day to do it. Good luck!!!

Jeez around here if you are absent for let's say two days (Mon and Tues) your homework that you missed would be due on Friday. You get however many days you missed to turn it in. I typically will not go up to the school to get there work unless they will have the weekend to do it because if they are too sick to go to school they probably don't feel like doing school work either. I would talk to the counselor or the principal about this situation. Your child should be given the time to make up the work and take the test after they have done the material.
