Elavil

Anyone ever take this and how was it? I am NOT sleeping at all. Went to see a counselor today and she e mailed me PCP to recommend this. Just curious about it...
I know all the "medical" aspects of it. Just wanted to hear information from someone who has BTDT.
Thanks!!

I have taken it for the last couple years for pain that was left from Shingles. It's only 25 mg. and I haven't noticed any difference in my seeping habits. But then I've never had any trouble sleeping.

My son has been taking it recently for a head injury. His is 50 mg. and he says they knock him out.

My friend has been taking them for a long time and she refers to them as sleeping pills. Her's is also 25 mg.

I'd say give it a shot. See if they are helpful. If you get the generic form (amitriptyline) they don't cost very much.

I took years and years ago. It made me gain 30lbs in one month. The doctor thought I was just eating a lot and didn't believe it was the Elavil. I just stopped taking it and I lost the 30lbs over the next 6 weeks. I didn't change my eating habits or exercise habits at all during the whole time. The doctor was mad that I had gone off the meds on my own and STILL didn't believe the Elavil caused the weight flucuations. It also didn't help my sleep one bit.

I've been taking amitriptylin (generic version) for over a year. It's sort of a wonder drug for people with fibromyalgia. It helps a lot with the fibro pain and depending on when I take it at night it does help me sleep also. I am only on 10mg and when they increased it my fingers and lower eyelid started twitching involuntarily. Being on the 10mg I am fine. It's also supposed to help with migraines. I haven't gained weight from it but I'm overweight to begin with.

This was one of the first drugs I took for my headaches many years ago. The only thing I remember it did for me was make me gain weight.

Elavil is a great old time drug. There are probably a couple of dozen reasons to take this drug and EVERYONE tolerates it differently. I took it years ago for some facial neuralgia. I could only tolerate 10mg. I would take it one hour before bedtime. I would sleep 10 hours like a hibernating bear. I doubt that I would have known if the house was on fire. I got up at 5am therefore I had to take no later than 6pm- in bed at 7 pm, and out like a light. On the opposite end of the spectrum, my friend's 80+ year old mom took 50mg and got up to pee during the night every night! You won't know until you try it. For safety sake, have someone else in the house- especially if you have kids at home, take it early, and see what happens. OH- do not have a critical appointment planned for the next morning. Just my two cents.

I took this a while back for headaches also.

I also found it to knock me out! I had to have about 12 hours ( sleep & then a zombie-like state) to recover to a point that I could function. I made the mistake of taking it around 10pm the first night and I was just unable to function until noon the next day. 10 mg dosage and I am no tiny girl. I also gained weight rather quickly on it. I took it for a month or 2 ( can't seen to remember now) just to break the cycle of headaches that were horrible but I had to stop taking this, the side effects were awful for me.
