Anyone know of someone in the military?

Hi everyone.....

I am looking for a little bit of help. My Brownie Girl Scout troop has been working really hard this cookie season to sell cookies and get donations for boxes of cookies to be sent to the military troops. So far we have had 50 boxes donated to the military troops. We colored pictures and wrote letters for 31 boxes.

Does anyone know of a person that is in Iraq currently serving any branch of military? If you do can you please email me with there address and we can send them some cookies.

I sent 31 boxes of cookies to Afghanistan(sp) Friday and it was just a joy doing this. I was really hoping to find someone that was in the military that did not have a wife/children or a lot of family members at home and send that person weekly packages, letters and cookies....but I just cant seem to find anyone. I know there is people in the military that are lonely and we would like to take someone under our wings.

Thanks for the help everyone.

Thumbs up

You could always visit anysoldier.com and select any one of the many, many people who have posted requests there. It is also sorted by location, branch, etc and you can even search for a person or group who would like cookies!

It's not really an adoption site though....adoptaplatoon.org might be good if you want to do that and don't find anyone here with a personal contact.

Thanks so much for the websites.....they are great and thanks for the tip on searching who would like "cookies"

I would really love to find someone who does not have family or get mail on a regular bases that is why I was asking here. I know some of you have either husbands/children or family serving in Iraq and did not know if any of your love ones have mention any one not getting mail.

Thanks for all your help. I am going to find three people(troops) to help out until they return home. I did pick a troop that is from NC from the anysoldier.com website that will be in Iraq until 30Dec2007. My plan is that twice a month we will send care packages filled with items they need and weekly we will send letters and cards. My girl scout troop will help out with this project and once our year has ended my family and my girls will continue this adventure....I think that it will teach my 5 girls something very wonderful and they will get the joy of giving something back to someone else who they do not know.

Thanks again
Tracy

Tracy,

I've found that the best way to find a person who needs support is to find a senior NCO (say by looking for rank on anysoldier.com) and ask him/her for personal recommendation in your correspondence. He/she sees who does and doesn't get mail call and should know whether or not the person would be receptive to such support. Someone here might have an SO/spouse who could also make a recommendation. I was thinking that folks that are reading/writing here are likely supporting their soldiers/Marines, etc.

One thing to bear in mind when doing troop support is that you cannot do it with the expectation that they will respond. While I find that many (most?) do, many do not. I don't think it's that they are unappreciative, but rather that they are very busy, spend their communication cycles with family/friends (as it should be), or simply aren't comfortable putting their thoughts on paper. Do be sure to include an e-mail address in whatever you send....most young troops are far more comfortable with e-mailing than letter writing....although they sure do appreciate getting the letter mail.

Good luck with your project....it can be a very rewarding experience!

Thanks Cj for the advice. I will look into finding someone who is a senior NCO. As far as not expecting something back I have told the girls that these men and women are fighting for there lives and our freedom and sometimes they just don't have time to write back.

My husband is in the Army.
If you are still in need of names I can ask him to get contact information for you of specific soldiers.
Just let me know.
Thanks for what you are doing.

Can you please see if you can get me an individuals name? I am looking for someone who will be there for awhile as this will be my own going project along with someone who really does not get mail.

Thanks so much for all your help. I look forward to this process.
