I got called a child abuser.

Oh the ridiculousness of it all. My niece who is a freshman had a playoff basketball game with the varsity team. (she lettered as a freshman..)
I shaved my kids heads into mohawks and died their hair red with kool aid. My nieces grandmother on the other side called me a child abuser.. not to my face of course.. I guess I'm not as anal with my kids, and it was something they wanted me to do. (I've done it before for a big game.) I mean it is hair.. it grows back for the love of God.. It still hurts to be called something so horrible...kwim?

how old are your kids? Old enough to have had a say in the shaving? Or did you hold them down and shave them against their will? LOL Try not to worry about what she said. Some people have no imagination.

Some people have nothing better to do than talk about others.

Don't you worry one bit, most kids probably wish they had you for a mom, sound great and full of school spirit!

I have read so many of your posts and think the same thing each time, you are a caring, fun loving mom and your kids are lucky to have you!

I personally would not have done it..but if your children are older and really wanted it, they are not teased at school about it, then I guess it is ok..yes, hair does grow back.. It is a little too drastic for me, however.

Utterly ridiculous! I am sorry that people have such misguided comments. IF they really want to see child abuse, look into real cases like where kids have been kept in cages like animals, or kids beating because their parents had a bad day, or children being traded off for drugs, or starved for no apparent reason ~ Now that's child abuse! A haircut and kool aid is not.

Perhaps, you should google child abuse and find some horrific picture or story and send it to them, so that they will know the true definition of child abuse and maybe, just maybe they will see how hurtful their remarks were to you.

Sorry, but child abuse really hurts my heart and is not to be taking lightly. As for you, I am sorry and in my opinion what you did is neither child abuse nor is it any of their business! Chin up and love your children as you wish!!

Oh my goodness! If your kids were sporting bruises instead of mohawks then maybe I'd understand more.
It's probably not something a lot of people would do but to be called a child abuser? Very dramatic! She may need to turn her attention to the homeless people that she can truly help or to the kids who have no parents at all or to all the kids who need adopting. She obviously has too much time on her hands and perhaps using her time more wisely to truly benefit someone would be time well spent.

I'm sorry about that - you were being a fun mom!

Don't forget that your neice's grandmother may be of a generation that is still SHOCKED by something they might perceive as extreme (such as a very creative, loud partially bald hairstyle). We have become more open to different looks, what with newer products, trends, not to mention the media, etc.

I actually wish that whoever shared the comment with you had kept it to themselves. There was no need to make you feel bad, when it was most likely a very sheltered little grandma-type who made the comment.

You sound like a fun, creative mom with lots of enthusiasm!! Some people will never catch up!

My son is 7 and has begged for a mohawk for months. There are three boys at his school who have them. Figuring it is just hair and we need to be flexable with the small stuff, he now sports a mohawk. It is actually pretty cool and we are behind him keeping it as long as he would like.

It's just hair for goodness sakes!!!

Bravo for being an *outside of the box mom* OP! I would have probably come over and said how cool I think what you did was Some people just like to gripe and complain about people who "aren't like them", especially older people in my experience (no offense to all older people....it's just a generalization).

I have had people offer my kids candy without asking me (like in a bank or a store) and I'll say "no thank you" and they call me a mean mom in front of my kids Stay true to you and don't let the boring people get in your way

My son wishes he was abused that way... he'd love a mohawk. I'm the one with the hang up, but I think it's great that you are so spirited.

Be careful with red Kool-Aid, it can really stain certain colors of hair.

Oh my! I know it is hard to ignore the things that people say, and a lot of people do say hurtful things. But just the simple fact that it bothered you shows that you are not a bad mom. My son has been bugging for a mohawk for weeks now.... am just about ready to cave in. Sounds like your kids had a blast, they're lucky to have you for a mom.
Take care
Sherry

Our school doesn't allow funky hairdos... dress code. So, every summer, my boys want some sort of *wild* hairstyle. It's fun.

I too think that it is sometimes difficult for certain people to understand good, clean fun. It's too bad.

I'd let her know that your feelings are hurt and hope for an apology but not expect one. Sometimes people don't know when to be quiet. It could also have been that she didn't say exactly that since you didn't actually hear her???

YOU know that you are not abusing your children and if you really were, she probably would say nothing. You know what I mean??? That's the sad thing.

I work at an elem. school. While I think its a fun thing to do (mohawks, coloring, etc) I can tell you that it causes LOTS of problems at this level. Too much of a distraction in the classroom. And then it seems to be a case of can you top THIS. I agree with Cuthie, the summer is a great time to do this stuff!

Fun, yes. Practical, no. I know the teachers at DS's school would frown on such. I don't want to draw attention to my children at school or give a reason for the teachers to single them out.

Oh I'm so sorry but don't let it bother you. There's nothing wrong with what you did. Like most everybody else has said, it's just hair. Every summer I let my DD do something crazy with her hair and last year she wanted pink in her hair so the entire underneath of her hair was hot pink and the top layer was blonde. I thought it was cute but my old fashioned parents said I was terrible.

Please!!! They really need something else to worry about. What you did is not abuse. You're kids probably think you're pretty cool for giving them mohawks and dying their hair red. I really don't see any harm in it at all.

Like others said, it may cause some disruption in school, but I don't see how it is abusive in any way.

Refund, I live very close to you. My kids go to N.C. schools. I think we live in somewhat of a snoby area. Some of the people around her think that they have a license to say and do whatever they feel. I think what you did was fun. But if that is what a child abuser does then I guess I will be in jail with you.

Don't worry about people like that since they seem to always have something to say. I think is great that you support your son on something he really wants to do since there are moms that will not do it and tell them you're crazy, it's not going to look right etc as long as it's positive and they want it why not it's to support a team and look cool.

I wouldn't say this is abuse, but it probably reflects more on you than the child. How old are they?

There is nothing wrong with what you did. Apparantly the ignoramus that disagrees with it thinks anything she doesn't like is child abuse.

If you held them down and forced them I could see it.

I say don't give it any more of your energy and just laugh it off and let it go. It will go too. You have better things to use your energy on.

Some people are just like that. I have jet black hair with bright blue streaks (clip-in). While walking with my kids I have heard people say "people like thet shouldn't be allowed to have kids." If they would take the time to get to know me they would find out that I am a firm believer in Christ, I sing in the kids band at church, run a church based girls group, and am a foster parent to a drug addicted baby. But they see my hair and nothing else. You just have to let stuff like that roll off your back. I am sorry she is so closed minded.

P.S. I have tried to shave my boys hair into a mohawk but he won't let me. He is 7.

I have colored my kids hair red and blue for school spirit day. Last year it so happened we were going to get our taxes done on that same day, they were mad because we were making them go with us LOL.

I wouldn't do the mohawk thing and I only use the wash out color, but who am I to judge what someone else does that is a little different?

People need to take care of their own kids and stop worrying about someone elses hair.

Now excuse me while I go dye my dog pink! (oops forgot I don't have a dog, hmmmm but my mom and my SIL do Muhahahahahaha )
