How Much Do You Pay For Braces?

I just took my daughter-11-she has perfectly straight teeth except the 2 front are slightly overlapping-but,the overbite is what is needed to correct. $4100.00 buck Yikes! At least he takes payments with NO interest. Insurance covers only 1000.00

That's about what ours was - Insurance paid $1000 and I think DDs were $4400.

my kids are not old enough for braces but i was reading on another group site and everyone was discussing this topic and $4100 was mentioned there too, that was deemed the most oft-quoted range.

$5,150 minus $1,500 insurance = $3,650 cash (more if you use their payment plan).

My son had a beautiful smile, it is his molars that are totally out of line. His top teeth bite outside of his bottom teeth.

VERY difficult decision for us to make but the bite really is bad.

Our other son will need them too.

Somewhere btwn 4-4.5k. Our orthodontist contractually charges less because of his agreement with our insurance co. and then we pay half of that lower amount. I think the lower cost is about $3500 and we pay half of that. Overall, we have a really good plan -- it used to pay 70% for braces which is almost unheard of. It was changed to 50% a few years ago which is still pretty good.

Both of my kids had crocked teeth and didn't need braces. Both of their dentist tried other methods before recommending braces...

DD used a tongue depresser serval times a day to help her push her teeth forward .DS was given a removal mouth piece I think it was called a retainer to wear night and day ..I think he wore it for like 3 or 5 months. It corrected his teeth. I think we paid $150 for the mouth piece and had to replace it 3 times because he kept on losing it but in the end it was lot cheaper than braces. The estimate we was given was around $3200 but that was years ago.

My dd needs an expander the ortho that is with the dentist told me $2200 for one!! My friend dd has one and it cost her $500, so guess where we are going to have the work done! I think it pays to shop around, I never knew that the range was so vast on what they charge.

I was curious about this thread because when I wore braces in the very early 70s it cost $1500 all together, insurance and what my Mom paid.

I almost fainted when I saw the prices you guys are quoting.

I had braces during Freshman & Sophomore yrs. (I think it was around 2500 and insurance paid 1/2. It was still alot of money for my parents back in 1984.) I wore my retainer religiously. Then, when my wisdom teeth came in, they pushed my teeth out of alignment again. Not as bad as they were before braces, but still. One of the things I'd love to do is another consult with an ODD. Hopefully I'd just need retainers.

DD was about $4400, no insurance. I did open a flexible spending account through work where I was at least able to avoid paying federal tax on the amount of the braces, so we saved several hundred dollars. We also got a discount for paying it all up-front. This year we were offered a variety of optional dental plans. I picked one up that will pay a max of $3000 towards braces after a two year waiting period- right around the time DS will need braces. The bonus is that I have better dental coverage for all of us now. ( I also picked up the vision coverage for DH and myself)

I believe DDs were about $4100 also(that was with a small price break for paying in full and no insurance). She had an expander with the braces from Aug '06- Jan'07 and now has a "P" bar instead of expander and the braces. She is suppose to have them for a total off 2 years.

This is what I am curious about. Does the cost differ if you have a more severe case or is it just a flat rate? My son has two teeth that turn in (one more than the other.). I have a feeling that he will need a lot of work done. My daughter, on the other hand, has nearly perfect teeth. I am wondering if the cost of braces is the same for two very different cases? I would think that the less severe the problem, the cheaper it would be. Anyone know?

Braces are expensive, but having crooked teeth will be more expensive to a person in the long run.

DS and DD are both in braces. $5,100 each, plus $240 each for the molds. Our insurance pays $1,500.

I totally agree it is well worth it, too.

My son has a very severe overbite and my daughter has an open bite. I thought the cost would be different for them but both were the exact same amount. $5000 and insurance paid $1500 each, so I ended up financing $7000 for the two of them! Ouch! We went with a company called Care Credit. If we pay in the time alloted there are no finance charges.

I've paid for 3 sets of braces now, and they averaged around $4500. It *was* a little more expensive for the dd with the more complicated correction.

Insurance paid $1000 each, which is pretty typical.

Remember than any work that is done by your regular dentist, like full x-rays and extractions, isn't part of the orthodontist's fee.

I had braces about in Junior high (20 years ago) for 4 years...3000.00...looking in the mirror now my bottom teeth are still crooked. The reason I believe is I got braces before my wisdom teeth came in, once they came in the bottom teeth were all jammed together. This would be something I would think about for the parents who want to get there kids braces when really young. I have heard of 3rd graders getting braces. OH MY GOD!!!!

$6000 in Orange County, CA.
$4250 in Phoenix, AZ

My insurance pays $2000 per child. I ended up paying about $2250 out of pocket. Plus, if you pay cash instead of payments, they give you a 5% discount. We got the braces on in Phoenix, before we moved to CA. I almost fell over when the Ortho in CA told me their flat-rate price. Give me a break!

I have no idea what my parents paid.

However, I went in recently to an orthodontist to have a discussion about getting a bonded (permanent) retainer. I ended up getting a spring retainer (only for the bottom teeth - my top teeth are fine) because the bottom teeth are slightly crooked from when I lost my first retainer.

Cost for the spring retainer and all appts is $325 - insurance doesn't cover any of it as it is considered a "retainer replacement".

To me it is well worth it to be out of the bite retainer (invisible like the invisalign braces - on top and bottom) and to be into an itty bitty retainer - even if I have to wear it all day/night for the next 6 months. Plus, my bottom teeth will be perfectly straight again.

I just got braces, days after turning 29. I never needed them before, but over the last few years my teeth have slowly shifted/started crowding. My dentist said it is not uncommon for adults teeth to continue shifting over time. Also said that it is very common for adults lower teeth to crowd because of bone lass in the jaw as they get older. Anyways, I figured I would just get them now instead of waiting to where I really needed them. Correcting the probs now would be less time in the braces. Cost me $5100

oh, and I got the porcelain brackets, which adds an extra $300 per row.

My DD got her braces 16 months ago and the total cost was $5200. We paid $4200 and insurance paid $1000. She had a terrible crossbite (actually no bite--her back teeth never touched!) and had to wear a roof expander for 3 months (she hated every minute of that!) along with the braces and will be getting her finishing wires in a couple of weeks. Her braces will be coming off 6 to 8 weeks later. She has the most beautiful smile now! I hated parting with the money but when I see her smile with those beautiful teeth (minus the braces), I know it will be well-worth it!
