I wouldn't really worry too much about it. As long as it's not the bus driver doing the smoking I think it's not that big of a deal. If it was bullying then I would yank her off the bus. At least they realized what was going on and tried to do something about it.

If you don't want her to ride the bus then you have the option of providing her transportation to and from school everyday. What does she think about it? I can remember when I was in school people would ocasionally light up a joint in the hallway, but then again that was back in the 70's. I would be more worried that the school might think she was involved somehow or associated with it since she was sitting with him. Any side effects for her, you don't have to smoke it to get high, you just have to breathe it in.

I have a middle schooler (6th grade) and although my life would be MUCH simpler if I let him ride the bus, I drive him to school myself. (I also have two first graders, in another school, that I take to and from.) Where we live, middle and high schoolers ride together, and IMO, it is a BAD idea to have 6th graders riding with 11th and 12th graders - that is a HUGE difference in ages! Obviously, I have no idea if you also have middle/high schoolers together, but that really simplifies the decision for me: No bus riding to/from school. I'm not trying to be an overprotective parent (ha, I'm sure my son already knows WAYYYYYYYYYYYY more than I do!) but I am trying to limit his exposure to certain things. Good luck with whatever you decide. Suzanne

suzanne: it is the same ,my dd is in middle school and the kid who smoked was is in HS,and it is a bad idea for them to ride together(40mn).I could drive her to school and pick her up (I also have a 4th grader and one who doesn't go t school yet),which would make my 4th grader miss the bus by the time I would get back home, therefore will have to drive him to school..but that can be done... I was also wondering with the side effect, she is moody right now,but she is 13 ,and is driving us nuts on any normal time... as far as thinking of what the school is thinking, well she is in 7th grade and the guilty kid is in HS...and she doesn't socialize with any of them outside the bus ride... |

In our district the buses have mixed grade levels but the younger students sit in the front of the bus and the older ones to the back. Do they also have assigned seating? I would call the Transportation department and ask for your child to be moved to the front so she won't be exposed to so much.

i dont think it's a big deal. she going to encounter this at school, parties, etc starting about this age. as long as the issue was properly addressed (which it seems like it was) i dont think there's anything worrisome going on. i would use the opportunity to talk w/ her about drugs and why they are harmful. i dont know if kids are allowed to move seats on your bus (at our school you can) but if so, i would talk with her about changing to a farther away seat next time to avoid being around the person (i dont think there's much inhalation risk unless you're very close, but being near one is a great way for your kid to accidentally get in trouble/suspicion/bad rep/etc). if she knows who was doing it, i would also encourage her to come forth in private or even anonymously. even if the school cant prove anything, letting the school know who their problems are is a good idea. the kid will be getting hauled into the principle's office and warned this way, which might be enough to prevent a reoccurence.

So far this year on our middle school bus (all middle school aged), but not on DD bus, 2 girls got into a fight and got arrested, a busdriver threatened a student with a box cutter and got fired. And we live in a very nice area. Lisa
