Aww Carrie, I know we all have had moments like that, I know I have had MANY over the last 25 years. and probably will have many more.Don't beat yourself up over it, We all have been there done that. Mine lets see.. when My 10 year old was 2 I had built a fire outside to burn leafs. She was outside with me, I turned around I swear it wasn't more than a few sec, but long enough she walked right into the fire ( It was a very small one, about 1 foot x 1 foot ) She had 2nd degree burns on the bottom of her foot, I ran inside screaming for DH to get a ice bucket, I stuck her feet into it and called 911, they took her to the hospital Via EMT. and doctored it up bandaged etc. I cried for MONTHS and months over that, till this day it still haunts me to think she walked Thur the fire pile. she doesn't recall it at all. The day after Katrina hit Alabama, We had alot of tree damage to the trees more than with Ivan and he hit us head on. Me and DH got the ax's, chainsaws. tree cutters etc out, we cut trees till dark that night, the next morning My Brother and Sis-In Law drove over and my Son ( The one with Autism ) was in and out with my Brother unloading his car, well this went on for maybe 15 mins or so. Now we had the ax's saw's covered with a tarp outside AWAY from the front of the house, however, He found the ax. he walked inside didn't say a word to us and asked if I could put his shoes on, when I leaned down to put them on SWEET JESUS HE had cut a huge chunk out of the top of his foot. He didn't cry or even act as if it hurt ( also a major problem with his Autism he has little pain when he gets hurt ). I scream like I had never screamed in my life, I grabbed him hubby ran to the van, we loaded him up and rushed him to the ER, it took 8 doctors and nurses to hold him down to give him the shot to knock him out, BTW which it didn't work, they gave him enough Meds to knock a horse out the doctor told us, however, it didn't him. We ended up wrapping him in a sheet and they gave him another shot to knock him out so they could sew his foot up. ended up he took 15 on top, 8 inside . he couldn't go back to school for 8 weeks due to him not being able to wear a shoe on the foot. I had asked DH the night before to put up the ax's and saw's he assured me they were covered and the kids wouldn't find them, from this we BOTH have learned, you can never be too safe with kids. I don't think neither one of us really forgave ourselves of this, I know I haven't not yet at least. So see we all have had these moments, its what we take from them that tells whether or not we are a bad Mother/ Father.

My daughter was 9 months old at the time and not sleeping well, so we used to let her sleep between us when she woke in the middle of the night. Big mistake. She woke up and fell off the bed and cracked her skull. She had to be rushed to boston hospital by ambulance and kept overnight. She had to have a cat scan to check for bleeding which thank lord there wasn't any, It was the worst day of my life waiting for the results and not knowing if she was ok or not. Everything turned out fine and we never ever let her sleep with us again. I still get visons of her falling off the bed and it shakes me up.

My youngest son will be 10 this May. I had a difficult pregnancy and delivery with him, and I was nearly 37 years old when he was born, so I was not in the best of health the first couple months of his life - more exhausted than with the first two. He would wake up almost like clockwork around 1 a.m. for a feeding, and I would sit in the rocking chair and feed him while watching reruns of "Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman". Well, the show and its' music did NOT hold my attention, and two or three times a week I would drift off, and my precious baby boy would slide out of my lap onto the carpeted floor. Usually on his diapered bottom, but of course his head was down there... Luckily the seat of the rocking chair was low lying, but I felt SO guilty and was quite relieved when ds#3 developed normally. Mine was when my oldest DD was three weeks old....DH and I were on a cot in her room b/c GOD FORBID she could not possibly make it through the night without us. Well, we as nervous and young 1st time parents, we were up and down all night every night for those three weeks. I had finished nursing DD and I laid back down on the cot...DH decides to let DD sleep on his chest so we can sleep the rest of the night. I wake up four hours later (totally refreshed) and I look over my DH chest and our DD legs are sticking out from under the crib. I almost died... I thought she was dead. She had obviously rolled of his chest in the middle of the night never even disturbing her two great parents. I woke my husband up and I watched him die alittle right there.......we just looked at each other and fought over who was going to pick her up. We were both terrified. So of course I pick up the dust ruffle to her crib that went around her little feet and she is there on her back sound asleep. We took the cot out of the room that night and amazingly enough DD slept through the night after that. Could it have possible been her over-protective parents waking HER up??? Of course since then I've been a perfect mother!! |

Mine was when I locked my DS, then 12 weeks old, in the car on a very hot, Florida afternoon! My car has an automatic locking system, so if you don't push the unlock button, periodically, the car doors automatically lock. (It was a safety mechanism, to prevent break-ins). Well, I didn't push the unlock button soon enough and as I slammed my door shut the doors locked and my keys were still in the car.I freaked! I called DH, who was the only person I could think of at the time and he raced home from work to unlock the car. Why I didn't call the police, I don't know. I guess it was just "a stupid new-mother" moment.

I have a few. My 2 month old fell asleep in my arms one day, so I lay him on the couch, and went to go open the baby gate so I could carry him upstairs. In the 20 seconds it took me to walk to the gate, he woke up, and learned how to roll. Right on the tile floor. I cried more than him! My daughter was jumping on her bed, and I told her to stop. She told me no, and kept jumping. so I went to grab her, and accidently PUSHED her- right off the bed, and against the wall. She flew like a muppet. And then there was yesterday, I was transferring laundry from the wash to the dryer, and didn't realize my son was walking towards the dryer. As I took a handful of towels, and swung them back to toss into the dryer, I smacked my poor son right in the face with all the wet towels. He flew back, and was crying his eyes out. I'm a clutz. My poor kids. |

So far I've managed to damage my three children. First my dd was about 4 years old and jumping on my bed, which I was sitting on. Since she had JUST recovered some stitches to her ear for jumping on my bed and hitting my end table I was admant she not jump on my bed. I put out my leg to stop her from jumping and boom, she fell. Instant pain. She had a hairline fracture of her leg bone and it took months for her to recover completely, her hip swung out funny and it hurt. I accidentially dislocated my ds2 elbow while walking with him. We were at a resturant with a friend, following the hotess. I steered him to the table adn all of a sudden screaming. My dd3 had just done the same thing in school so I knew immediately. Quick trip to the er and all was better. The doctor had told me I could just "pop" it back in myself but I just couldn't do it. I was soo afraid at the hospital that they were calling protective services. I was pretty honest and told the er nurse that I had done it. But, in my defense that is a very common injury. I cringe when I see parents (mostly fathers) swinging their kids, playfully my the arms. Then lastly I was leaf blowing with my 3 week old baby outside in his carrier on the front stairs. A stray leaf hit him right in the middle of his forehead. He had a little mark for over two weeks. Luckily no real damage, but come on three weeks old and already damaged? |

So far, mine would be when I slammed Eryn's fingers in the door. She was about 2 1/2, I guess. We ended up going to the ER so they could put her fingernail back on. I'm not sure exactly what they did as I had to leave the room so I wouldn't vomit. They gave her some shot in the finger and I guess pushed her nail back in to the bed. She walked around with her finger bandaged up for about a week or so.Another thing with Eryn: She got a razor and "shaved her face" in the bathroom one day. Blood was everywhere. She was screaming like crazy. Something told me to MOVE the razor, but in my haste, I didn't. She only had a cut above her lip and didn't require stitches or a trip to the hospital, but I felt like crap.

My son did the face shaving trick too. He cut his lip and it would NOT stop bleeding. I was on my way to the emergency room when it finally stopped. And my dad slammed my son's fingers in the car door once and felt AWFUL!!!! I feel guilty for the one time my son was totally acting up in the grocery store running up and down the aisle and then wouldn't come to me when I told him. He thought it was a chasing game. I couldn't catch him. Well, when I finally got a hold of him I whipped his butt good. I felt so guilty for spanking him over that!

Brings back a terrible memory. My DD was about 10 months old and had just started walking. I was home with her on a terrible winter day, my day off. I was in a great mood and cooking her favorite breakfast- raisin bread french toast. I made myself a cup of tea and put it on the kitchen table and pushed it way back where I always put it. Well this time, DD could reach it, and as I had my back turned, she pulled it down on herself. It was very hot and soaked her flannel one piece jammies. I peeled them off her immediately, but she did end up with a blister about the size of my thumb on her upper arm, and a smaller mark on her fore arm. Totally shattered my confidence as a Mom for a period of time.

Oldest dd was about 4 years old. I was making cookies and I didn't realize she was standing right behind me. I took the cookie sheet out of the oven and turned around and accidentaly hit her right under her eye with a piping hot cookie sheet. She screamed! I about died! It gave her a blister about an inch long and to make matters worse, that night was her 1st dance recital and pictures. Lisa

I have 2 like these.... When DS1 was about 2. I had just pulled dinner out of the oven and placed it on the cutting board while I walked to the dishwasher to get some plates. DS1 was courious to see what I had and put his hand inside the pan. He burned his wrist pretty bad. I am grateful he does not have a scar. The day after DS2s 3rd birthday a friend came over. My boys and her son were jumping off the bed onto a beanbag. Well DS2 missed and landed n a hot wheel. He came out crying and I rubbed and kissed his head and off he went to play. Next day he was outside playing and I noticed he wa still limping. i took his to the Dr., then to get x-rays, then back to the Dr. He had a hairline fractor on his growth plate. He was in a cast for 3 weeks and I had to take him to see a foot Dr. to make sure he was OK. However my worste "Mom moment" was a few days ago. I had a servere sinuse headache, was on medication for said headache (that didn't work) and was feeling very spacy. I was trying to help both boys with (fighting with them to do) their homework and the baby (almost 2) was screaming at me. "Mom, Mom, Mom...." I ended up yelling at her (trying to get over her screams) to stop screaming and it scared her. She started crying then so did I. Both my boys ended up giving me hugs and finishing their homework without any more arguements.

Well, as a mom of four boys, I have lots of stories to tell. My first is when we lived in a house w/ a gas fireplace. It had a glass enclosure and all you had to do was flip a switch on the wall to turn the fire on-and it was so cozy. Well, we had lived in that house for a year and a half w/ no mishaps, then one day, I had a friend over. My one year old son walked over to the fireplace and put his hands on the glass screen-totally burnt his hands-had to spend a couple of days in the hospital and lots of weeks in bandages after that. Another mom moment that sticks in my craw, is that one day, I was on the phone. Youngest child is "Mom, mommin' me." I didn't even look at him-told him to hold his horses, I'd be off the phone in a second. Well, thank goodness I did look at him. He had found a way to wrap a rubber band around his neck-and was totally blue in the face. It was so tight, I had to cut it off him. So do I win???? |

Since burns accidents seem to be rather common, here's what I use for burns. It's called Foille and I get it at my drug store. I keep a tube on the windowsill. It will initially burn worse, however, it is the best burn medication I've ever used. First cool water or ice and then Foille.
