Have you noticed?

I am wondering if anyone else has noticed all the tv talk show host say they don't let their kids watch tv. Kelly Ripa, Rosie and I know I have heard many others. Don't you think that's kinda strange. They are on tv, make money because of their tv apperances but don't approve of it for their kids? Not sure I understand that.
My MS brain is not working today so hopefully you all understand what I am saying. Just one more side effect from that wonderful disease MS.

yeah, but you know, they have the money to send their kids to cruises and tennis lessons over the summer..not some single mom who is struggling..If I had the money to do that..my kids would not watch tv so much either.

I had never heard of that growing up--every body watched TV! However, when we moved to this town, I found it's more the norm than the exception. In my scouting group, most of the families don't have televisions--by choice.

We have TV's in our house but no Cable! I think that there is so much other stuff for kids to do. We are trying to filter some of the crap out that kids seem to see every day.

The reason I think they don't let there kids watch t.v. is because they probably never know what someone is going to say about them. At any given time someone can slam them. How would your kids feel if someone called you Fat, Stupid, ugly and worse, way worse anytime they feel like that. I don't think it has to do with t.v. not being good enough for there kids they are probably just protecting them the best they can. (I think I heard Kelly Ripa say her kids watch videos, thats probably becasue no one can slam her on that video) I mean what if Dannilynn was old enough to hear what everyone says about her mom? That can majorly damage a child. If I were in the public eye I would not let my kids watch t.v. either.

Boy, if we could all afford for nannies to entertain our kids all day, our kids probably wouldn't watch so much tv either.....

I know that some celebrities have one nanny per child. While it would be nice for a bit, I do think that is sad.

I do think that kids watch too much TV.
I think a lot of what they watch is garbage, but there is a lot of good TV out there for kids to learn from.
Parents need to make the choices and set limits.
As hard as it is, parents should find other entertainment for their kids whenever possible.
I like the idea of Family Game Nights and things like that.

But I don't know why celebraties don't let their kids watch TV!

I agree with them. Kids today watch way too much tv when they could be using their brains and imagination. My son read comic books, books, and did other things he did not just sit in front of the tv like a lump.

They may make their money from being on tv that doesn't mean they have to let their kids watch crap. Just because you make your money from the food industry does not mean you feed your kids fast food crap.

I agree so much with jm19 it's the parents' responsibility to see what their kids are watching and make sure they understand the difference between reality and tv between ads and recommendations etc.

It has nothing to do with Nannies. I was a single working Mom and I took care of my son. If kids are watching tv because the parents can't afford a nanny the parents need to learn a few things.

Kelli Rippa was saying that this morning and I thought it odd that she approved of American Idol for her 9 year old, but nothing else..Sorry even my 11 year old isn't staying up that late on a school night to watch!. My children don't watch a lot of TV especially now that its nice..... but whats wrong with Animal planet, Discovery Kids and other kids shows......

But I guess if I had the money to take my children to Broadway shows almost weekly, they wouldn't have any interest in TV....LOL... I will have to ask the Nanny what she wants to get paid to do with my children after school today.....

Some other star was saying that she doesn't allow her 10 or 11 year old on the computer at all...becuase it is "dangerous".... Again yes it is dangerous if you allow your child free rain, but its called "parental responsiblity"....Look at what they're watching and doing online so its not harmful..... Rippa said she allowed him to watch b/c his friends were watching...well my daughter came home last week and said that a couple of kids were talking about "Dirt" on FX could I tape it for her....so I watched an episode and my answer was "when heck freezes over"......

Personally I watched some TV growing up and I think I turned out pretty o.k.......

They make their money off TV but they won't let their own kids watch. Doesn't surprise me at all. Another one is Madonna. I heard her say that on The View once. But like others have said, if all moms had nannies and caretakers and the loads of cash these people had, guess our kids wouldn't have watched so much TV either. Hey, without the general public watching them, guess they'd be out of a job now, wouldn't they? Maybe everyone should stop watching TV and see how long they keep their millions!

This is a timely topic for me because we are in the middle of a Turn Off Your Screens project for school. They are asking the kids to not watch TV, play video games, or use the computer (except when necessary for homework) for the 10 day prior to standardized testing. Since my dds have testing in different weeks, the no TV thing is even more than 10 days in our house (since March 4). Honestly, it's been really, really easy. They have not complained about it once. They've been outside playing and riding bikes and scooters, playing inside with their toys, drawing, painting, coloring - basically doing the stuff they should be doing anyway!

There have been so many studies done about the ill effects on children of watching too much TV. Just ask your pediatrician or do a google search to read some of the scary statistics.

I was going to post about Madonna too. I think it's totally funny (um hypocritical) that she made all of those comments about how bad t.v. is and how her kids will never watch t.v., etc., and she with all of her MTV videos (where she is basically wearing nothing, selling sex, etc.) aimed at teens was/is a major contributor. Guess if it pays the bills then it's good, they just don't want the 'crap' in their own homes.

I think truly though that to totally not let your kids have any t.v. time at all? I think that's unrealistic. I want my kids to be aware of and knowledgeable about things in the world. There are some really good things on t.v. too. I grew up watching it and somehow I'm fine. I certainly think there are way too many things on there also that kids should not see though. Hope that makes sense.
