We do but have the little things that you screw onto the window track so that the window can't open more than a couple of inches (you can set them wherever you want). They are impossible to break into without lots of force and would be as noisy as someone breaking in with them closed. Our other solution is that we try not to read or watch the news. I do not like being paranoid and am very susceptible to it. |

No, because one night my inside cat fell out of the window screen (it wasn't attached all the way) and it took us almost all night to get her back in the house she was so scared. Plus, I have allergies so the outside air at night is not that great for me to be breathing. As far a being on the second story I would not find that very safe either, I once had a very athletic friend and he climbed on my friend second story roof in less than in minute.

Yep but it's getting so cold today that I'm closing them lol... our bedrooms are upstairs, I keep the downstairs windows locked if we're not down there (plus it's so much cooler anyway). The dog barks whenever she sees or hears anything nearby so I don't feel unsafe.

Yes but we also have the burglar alarm wired so it goes off if the window is lifted more than 1/2 way.

I live in a one story and leave the windows open. But I don't leave my kid's windows open. I don't really know why but I've always been that way. Of course these days, it's just the girls and myself and they sleep with me most of the time and when it's warm outside we love to have the windows open.

Never, I use to many moons ago, but crime wasn't as bad as it is now and children were not the number 1 target of the SICKO's out there. So I would never ever sleep with them open, as a matter of fact i dont sleep with any window opens even if we have had a hurricane here and been w/o power like when Ivan came thur and took 9 days to get power back.

I used to live in a house n the middle of a 400 acre cow pasture. I worked 2nd shift and got home around 2 am ususally. my bedroom had a door that went out on the screened front porch. i left that door open all nite. not a problem. it was hot and I didnt have a/c so it was either leave the door open or fry all nite. i lived about 27 miles from the nearest town then and no neighbors anywhere around unless you count the cows. lol we live a little closet to town now and we leave the windows up in the spring some times but since my allergies went nuts last spring , i doubt I will do it this spring. aint worth waking up sneezing and coughing. would leave them up if it wasnt for that.

Nope, but it's not for safety. Both children, DH and myself have allergies. Early morning and evenings, I leave the patio window raised along with the door going into the garage. This helps cool the house. When it too warm we turn on the air. Plus the ceiling fans go all the time.

Allergies here, too. It would be very easy for someone to get onto our porch roof and enter a bedroom window. However our house is built into the side of a hill so half the upstairs (sewing room, bathroom and office) are on the first level. If someone wants in here bad enough he will get in. He doesn't want to meet up with me tho!!! Our kids are grown and gone so we have no little ones to worry about. When we did, we never worried much because we live in a really safe, quiet area..........knock on wood............. One winter DH worked nights and I had the window open every night. It was so cold and it felt so good!

We do sleep with the windows open upstairs when weather allows- this is New England so the opportunities are few. I need the windows closed and locked downstairs, though now that the yard is fenced in with a 54 inch fence I feel safer . We live in a nice area, but DH sleeps away from home frequently as he is a fireman.

When it's warm enough all my windows in my house are open all the time. Day and night. I can't get enough of the fresh air. I hate being in a house with the windows all closed. So I really hate winter. I try to open them in the winter when it gets a little warmer for a bit to get fresh air in here. Jen

Our house is only one story and I won't sleep with them open. I feel that we live in a safe neighborhood, but I'm not willing to risk it. The outside noise also bothers me and I can't fall asleep with the windows open. Even if we had a two story house, I still would not feel safe leaving the windows open at night. I lived in a two story house when I was younger and my bedroom was on the second floor. One night when my mom was tucking me into bed, she saw what she thought was her reflection in my window, but it didn't move when she did. It was a Peeping Tom on the second floor! There was no ladder or trellis for him to climb up, but he managed to get up there anyway. I can't imagine what might have happened if my mom had not seen him and my window was open, or just unlocked. Just because you have a window open on the second floor doesn't mean you are safe. |

We live in my in-laws basement. We don't have any windows. I open the door during the day to get some light and see the outdoors. When we lived upstairs, before we finished the basement, we'd open the windows if it was cool enough at night. We had the smallest room in the house, and it was the hottest room too, even the air on didn't help us. The basement, on the other hand, is cold all the time. If we had windows, I'd probably open them in the summer to try to warm up some.

I would love to, but dh is an a/c man. He is very anal about the temp being the same in our house 24/7 year round. This time of year drives me nuts, because I have to switch between the furnace and a/c constantly depending on our crazy Indiana weather, high of 75 last week and now high of 45 this week. I grew up with windows open day and night, very rarely used the a/c only on the really, really hot days of summer. And I loved it. I open the windows now during the day when dh is at work, it just seems to really freshen the house up with the fresh air. Jenn |

Nope, I am not comfortable at all with it. My hubby works night and I keep the windows shut, even if it means turning on the AC earlier than needed. Darlene

I'm on the first floor and when its warm enough I will leave mine open but my dog sleeps in bed with me. If someone is stupid enough to come in they meet her first. And she doesn't always growl or bark before she greets.

I love the windows open whenever it is posible- today it is snowing so not tonight. As my son says Hakuna Matata - I don't worry about the big bad world while inside my home.

I am in Jacksonville Florida and there is only about a week in january and maybe one in February that isn't too darn hot to have it on. I am not joking I think there was like three days so far in the last fall and now ending "winter" that we even turned are heater on. If it goes below 68 degrees in the house I will FREEZE. We pretty much run the ac 24/7 here.

Maybe I'm crazy, but I'm just not afraid. I suppose that because my husband used to be a police officer, and is a dispatcher now, I've realized that crime doesn't tend to happen in a vacuum. I know that in a lot of cases the terrifying stories we hear on the news leave a lot of information out, and that it's much more common to be a victim of someone you know than a stranger. I've also heard enough stories where the victim's relationship with a criminal, or history of drug dealing was never mentioned. I do watch the news, but I take it with a huge grain of salt.

At our old house, our bedroom was on the second floor and we used to sleep with the windows open sometimes in the spring or fall. Now that our bedroom is on the main floor, we do not sleep with the windows open. I do not allow my children to be in their bedrooms (on the second floor) if the windows are open, so they have never slept with the windows open. Sarah.......mom to Jason & Devin |

During the summer all the windows upstairs are open as soon as it starts cooling down. At night the boys room gets closed partially. It has a lock on it so they can't open it any farther than it is. They can't get their head thru it so I know they can't fall out. I refuse to be paranoid. A criminal is going to get into a house whether its all locked up or if you leave everything open.
